Changed the fluid last night. Had the car up on a lift. First thing I noticed was when I removed the top filler plug at least a quart of oil came out. Ok so I figured that the car may not be perfectly level and is tilting back. When I refilled it took almost 5 quarts? I thought the capacity was 4?
Car "feels" better and smoother. The 3rd gear grind was greatly reduced. 2nd still notchy but better.
Now my question is how bad is it to overfill a manual trans? I know it is a big no no for automatics.

Gear oil should be:
3.8 liters (4 quarts) for 85 and earlier.
4.5 liters (4.75 quarts) for 86 and later.
The gear oil isn't pressurized like the motor oil is, so IMO a little over probably won't matter. Some of it may leak out of the rubber plug on top of the transmission. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Did you check your rear coupler bushings while you were under there?

You should be fine; extra fluid in manual trans would just mean more drag/less power to wheels, and the extra drag may have been the cause of your shift problems.

No did get a chance to look at the bushings. It was around 1am when I took it for a ride.
I had good intentions of even bleeding the clutch etc but it was just too late.
I am lucky I have a lift at the house so tomorrow is another day.
Haven't even thought about the clutch disks yet.
I did drive it today and all around it "feels" better.
