Oil pressure mystery

Ive seen the same pressures with 4 different 928s running amzoil 20-50
and all of them were raced and all of them are still racing today.
3 of them used mobil 1 once and then never again due to lack of pressure when hot.
hey, its cheap insurance and no one has the sucess record as i do running amzoil, nor the number of racing hours. more than probably porsche themselves.!

Heinrich lives in the great northern cold wastelands - he doesn't encounter such temperatures - he's lucky to see the sun for half the year.... (bit like New Jersey really). Maybe ambient temp is the major deal here...
However don't get me wrong - I think 3 bar is great - but you never really know if the gauge is telling you the truth - same with all the dash gauges really...
Some will have higher pressures because of lower ambients and generally heavier oil - e.g. Kibort runs 20W50 I think and says he gets good pressures consistently.

Or at least a chance to attach one temporarily to verify your gauge is working correctly and is approximately correct across its range.
So if a mechanic had one he could hook up you'd get some sense of confidence in your gauge (or a correction factor).

I used to be a big Mobil 1 guy and used it for over 7 years in the shark. (First at 20-50 and then when they switched to 15-50) I decided to give the Royal Purple a shot as Wylie here in the DFW group is a major distributor here in N. Texas. I figured if I didn't like it I could always switch back on the next oil change. I thought like the commercial used to say "motor oil is motor oil", and I figured no matter what synthetic blend you used, it had to be pretty good at over $5 a quart!!!!
Started using the Royal Purple and I felt that the engine was smoother and revved quicker. Did it? Could have been my imagination or wishful thinking but in my opinion, it did.
Now, I absolutely know that I get better oil pressure with it over M 1 and that is a fact. My 79 always hits 5 bar at anything over 2000rpm, even in the dead of summer. It NEVER idles below 2.5-3 bar even when hot in 100 deg. temps.
Now, I guarandamntee that the Porsche engineers never engineered these cars to flicker the op warning light. EVER.
Use what you want, I'll stick with the Purple!

Yup. That's what I meant. You remove the oil pressure sender and connect the external gauge in place of the sender. Then you have an independent measurement. I have such a gauge and have done this to diagnose a bad sender. It's a bit of a messy affair though.

Amen. with the 928s bad luck with mobil 1 and the evidenced that it turns to water with heat. the gauge and the warning light cant both be bad! (addressign the gauge possibility)
So, you can put weight into the evidence ive provided as well as others, or continue to put trust in a "marketing" agreement with porsche and Mobil 1.
personally, i dont think the oil pressure light should ever go on either!!
Royal purple, redline, amzoil, it doesnt matter in my book

I have no doubt that Doug's car is in good shape. I did not mean to imply that there was anything wrong with the car nor Doug's analyses of oil. My comment was intended, only, to be humorous in the vein of casting aspersions on Doug for trading in his 928 for a Boxster. He's obviously short two cylinders...
