Lightbulb Door Mirror Glass Removal (later flag style)

Just in case anyone would like a few pictures before attempting this job, hope these help:

Underside of mirror showing notched ring (the mirror needs to be adjusted to face all the way down). With a small screwdriver push the notches from right to left in this picture to unlock.

Once the glass is removed the notched locking ring becomes clear (careful removing the heater wires)

The servo mechanism remains inside the mirror body secured by three (rusty) bolts

Here is a repair to one of the nylon servo arms, using a very fine machine screw from an old watch

Here is what it should look like

Paul, I'm trying to do this. I thought the tabs that needed to be moved to unclip the mirror were on the bottom and unfortunately the images of your post are now gone. Do I need to get at it from the top or bottom?

It looks like it should be the bottom, but I can't get anything to move on either mirror. I'm really hoping not to break them.

Thanks
Rod

There is a hole in the bottom that you use to access the lock ring - this only works on later style 87+ flags - the early ones have a different clip arrangement.

I can see the ribbed section with the small "rod" that engages a notch in the outer ring. I can actually rotate the mirror upward enough to see this from the outside, but when I try to "gently" seperate the two and rotate - the outer ring? - I can't get anything to move on either mirror (87 model). It all looks very fragile and I'm hesitant to apply much force.

I was hoping someone had images that would indicate exactly which piece needed to be "encouraged" and to make sure I had disengaged it properly. It all looks imminently breakable.

Do I need to soak the backside with Kroil and let it sit overnight?

Ignorance is certainly NOT bliss.

Rod......the glass part of the assembly is removed by inserting a small flat blade screwdriver in the hole at the bottom of the assembly. The screwdriver then moves the locking ring ~1/8 of a turn a presto; dont recall which direction but it its very evident..

Hmmm, that hasn't worked so far. The car was from Arizona, until it came to live with me recently, so maybe the ring is full of sandy Arizona grit. I'll soak it good tomorrow with Kroil and see if that frees it up.

Thanks

I found that I could get to the lock ring from the TOP of the mirror.

I adjusted the passenger mirror all the way down (looking at the ground from the driver's seat), then used a thin screw driver from the top, sliding it behind the glass onto the latch ring and levering from outboard to inboard. I pushed a little on the bottom of the mirror to widen the gap at the top.

It actually didn't take much force when I pushed on the right part, and the ring doesn't move much (an eight of a turn sounds WAY more than what I moved mine).

Yes it IS fragile, and I had to go back in there to reconnect the ball joint for the left-right adjustment because I accidentally popped it off, so be careful.

Since these are like the aeros - I think its really only a few degreees of movement close to 5 degrees I'd say.

On the aeros its a toothed ring that you can easily see... I never remember which way the ring goes to unlock though.

The 928.org.uk server seems to be down at the moment, but Angus is pretty good at sorting things out if they do go wrong so I don't expect the outage to last very long.

Meanwhile I've attached the pictures directly to the post.

Thanks Paul, I'll lube it a bit and give it another try tonight.

ok I agree 1/8 th turn is prolly too much; how about we agree on a wee bit of a turn.

Be careful with the lube you use; plastic parts!
