I would stay away from synthetic unless it's been used since the car is new.

Like you said - take it slowly. Mine is 83 3 speed, but mostly same underneath. Undo plug or pipe connection which will drain the pan. Disconnect whatever pipes needed to enable pan to fall, undo fixings after all drained. Rotate converter until you can access plug and undo to drain. Clean inside of pan. Replace converter plug - I just did it tight - steel plug into steel. Replace filter inside pan - just philips screws holding it. Take some care with refitting the new pan gasket/seal - it will probably have taken a set from storage that is slightly out of shape needed to fit easily - try to make it stick on the top edge of the pan as it goes up, and check all around as you tighten the bolts. The pan (on mine anyway) has flats that stop you crushing the seal. Filling:- SLOW work - keep adding slowly until it wont go down anymore in the reservoir (couple of litres at least), then start engine, and stop as soon as reservoir is empty. Refill, restart until level wont drop below normal cold mark when starting. Mine took right on the spec 5.5L. Kit should come with new cruch washers for drain fitting/pipe banjo.
Good luck.

From a recent post here:

I posted the procedure to Rennlist a while back, and the post is enshrined at the Nichols tip site complete. Look under auto trans and you'll find it I'm sure!

<a href="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/nichols/tip275.htm" target="_blank">http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/nichols/tip275.htm</a>

That should do the trick for you!

A note: Rich Andrade in Phoenix posted later that he had a problem using the Mobil-1 synthetic ATF that I used in my car and mentioned in the procedure. No way to identify the the Mobil-1 was part of the problem, but the caution is shared just in case.

Hope this helps!
