Default Stall while driving.

Dave H.
1989 S4 Auto

Good morning
I have had a long running problem. First began a year ago. Hot Day. I was returning from Indy F1 when driving on I74 in Illinois, car stalled. While trying to start, I ran the battery down. I friend in the area came to my aid. We replaced the battery(bad cell). Car started and ran for a few miles, stalled again. Would not start and ran the battery down again. Took it back to place of purchase and recharged the battery. Car started and drove home, 100 miles. By this time it was cooler. No problem. This same scenario has occurred twice since. Checked the alternator, OK. I cleaned wire connectors to battery. Small gauge wires had corrosion. No problem for many months. Thought that was the problem. Yesterday it happened again. Seems like it runs out of fuel. This time I ONLY let the car set for 20 min. and it started and ran for a few miles. If started immediately it acts like starving for fuel. Another 20 min. and a few more miles. After 3 or 4 rests, my 928 corrects itself and off I go. Runs great.
113,000 miles and no modifications.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Dave

Sounds most likely just a bad fuel pump that doesn't like the heat.... (or possibly connections to it or a bad fuel pump relay). I'd investigate there if it happens again.

The initial battery issues may be coincidental and would have made the fuel pump situation worse while starting with a poor battery...

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll look in that direction.

Probly want to check out the fuel filter while it's apart and your down there....it might be worthwhile to put a gauge on the fuel rail to see what going on in real time first if you can.

Lack of info from PO. Changing Filter now. I'll check pressure when I can find a gauge.
Thanks for all the direction.

Dave...........another consideration is the engine fuel lines themselves.

Not suggesting that these may be the cause of the intermittent issue but should be changed as a matter of maintenance on a car thats approaching 20yrs old.

Roger has a great kit on:
