Viribusunitis,
If I am out playing around and wanting to take off like a rocket, I am not doing 60mph in third gear. I’m just getting into 2nd gear at 50mph with the hammer down.
As far as your miss fire, in your long elegant story, you failed to mention that your car miss fired. It could have been the "neibor" shooting at you or it could have been the other car back firing. If you had "throtal” as wide as it'll go, and it backfired, you probably would have felt it.
Simple test, Open it up around the neighbors house again and see if you hear the bang again. If your car has not been missing and you didn’t see the second car pull out, then the bang was the shotgun. If this is the case, don't open it up around his house again, he might hit his target!

Viribus,
Actually, you didn't misspell it in your sig, but in the body of your message - "flacks".
You accidentally spelled it correctly in your signature.
You go, guy.

I'm deffently male! Well, at least last time I checked. Yea, make sure the twins don't mees with my girl. I didn't think of that, but deffently something to worry about! (Not realy, I'm pretty sure she could tell the diffrence. Apperently, I act strange...)
I've found the spell checker on the board to be less that great. Most of the time, it suggests wrong words. Also, as the connection is slow, it is slow, and gets flacky at times. Realy annoying.
I'm 100% sure that I wasn't shot at. There are NO houses on that part of the road, no one to shoot at me. When I get to around his house, I back off, and play realy nice...
BTW, I don't normaly use 2nd gear simply because the syncro is balky, so I just skip to third most of the time. I know it hurts acceleration, but I hate trying to fight 2nd into gear, and even with the double clutch, it doesn't want to go. So, I skip it. Problem solved, untill I can rebuild the transmittion.
I sure wish I knew what could cause the ingition to cut out like that. When my tach works, it seems to conform that idea. When I get my traditional miss at 3,500, the tach would fall to near 0. Then when the miss clears up, the tach returns to it's previous value. I can't seem to figure out the wireing diagrams on the Service Mannual, and I've been though all the connections I can find. I've cleaned them, and they all look good. I don't realy know what to do about it now.

I've run gallons of various brands of injector cleaners though my car. I've tryed Chevron gas, w/ techron, as well as the Shell stuff, with their detergents.
All to no effect.
Tanks for the suggestion, but I realy do feel like it's an ingition problem, but I can't figure out exactly how it works.

Hey, he's getting much better - let's cut him some slack.
I don't think we want new visitors to be put off from contributing due to a perception of grammatical elitistism, do we.
I do agree that in a written forum such as this one, words - and how they are used (or abused) - do make an impression. Sorta like showing up at the party with your shirt hanging out and a mustard stain on your pants
Can you dig it...

If the engine cuts out and the tach falls to zero, the pickup unit in the distributor or one of its connections may be bad.
If other things happen at the same time, such as warning lights coming on, the ignition switch may be making intermittent contact.

Well, just to let you know, the road is a reletivly long one. Unless someone was trying for a 2-3 mile shot, I wasn't shot at. That area around that part of the road is currently an out of season cotton field. A guy with a 30-06, .302, or .270 might be able to do it, but almost certainly not with a shot gun. Well, maybe a rifled sabot slug, but still, not likely.
My car is very loud. That is what happens when you have metal pipes going from a 4.7l V8 into a little old borla muffler. At idle, I swear there is a power pulse that will move your jeans if your behind the car. (btw, the car isn't too loud at idle.) It get really annoying when I'm travaling at 70 mph in 5th. For some reason at that speed the rear trunk area acts like a resonance chamber, and it trys to massage my head. I solve the problem by doing between 75 and 80. But like I said, fortunately, that area is in the middle of an out of season cotton field.
Wally, do you have any information on the pick up on the distributor? I don't feel safe taking it apart yet, becuase I won't know what I'm looking at. I know the green wire is pretty new, and that all the connections I can find look good and clean. Both when the green wire connects to the engine harnass, and where the harnass connects to the transisterized ignition control unit.
According to the PO, the distributor cap, distributor rotor, all the spark plug leads, the coil, and the green wire are all reletivly new. They look it, all the leads are still nice, and rubbery, the coil even has marking like it was from 928 intl on it. The above have 10,000 miles and maybe 2 years on them. I replaced the coil to distributor lead, after I broke it. It has about 4,000 miles on it. I bought it knowing there was a miss.
Basicly, do you have any suggestion on the distributer pick up? Any help would be welcome.
Thanks

Check your speed sensor (and TDC sensor) located on the rear of the motor and top of the bell housing. If they are loose, they could move upwards loosing the correct level of contact. You can't miss them. They are both secured with allen bolts and they are in close proximity of each other.
Hey, it doesn't hurt to look and BTW - The flash of light - It was God telling you to slow down and to use your second gear!
Have you ever been shot at with Salt Shotgun?. Oh those were the days when I took my camaro through a corn field - Another Story - Another Time.

Never been shot at, period! I try to stay away from the business end of fire arms. You never know when the drunk farmer might hit something important!
Slow down!?!?!? Why would I want to do that? If I wanted to go slow, I'd have bought an 83 911! ;-)
I'm guessing these are under the air box, and the MAS? I was under the impression that the senors under the air box worked the rpm input for the L-jetronic system.
For some reason, I thought the ignition's senor was in the bottom part of the distributor. Course, never having the thing apart, I don't know.
Thanks though, I will check.

Drewster's notion is the same one that I had...because my car had [and occasionally still does have!] a complete miss. This happens for a split second, but when it does, it nearly throws me through the windshield!
I noticed one day that the plug from the harness to the timing and reference signal on my '85 S2 5 Speed was crumbling, and when I tried to disconnect it to examine it...it turned to dust in my hands. Having no other alternative, I pulled the individual wires apart and spliced them together with crimp connectors, but since then I've had this wild occasional miss. Really, it only happens about once per week. It seems to be RPM-dependent too, occuring at around 2100 on the tach, leading me to believe harmonic vibration in the splices is causing a loss of signal. Anyone know where to get connectors? I guess its time to buy a new TR sensor too...
[Dopplegangers...we all have them. As to my "twin", I don't suggest accepting cheap imitations.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ]
Normy!

Yep, underneath the airbox, The speed sensor is the one to the front of the motor and the TDC is to the rear. Mind you, they are a pain in the arss to get too because you must remove the airbox, then practically lean on the fender to reach them. If your like me and don't put any weight on the fender, your back and leg muscles realy get a stretching.
Normy, Ditto that. I had to do the cut and splice gig as well. I too have an occassional miss. As far as the Ref. Sensor Part. Devek has them and so does 20th st.

Viribus,
I know you wrote that the PO said he changed the coil, but this excerpt from a WallyP reply to a thread on coils makes me think your miss at 3500 rpm may be the fault of a weak coil,
"If you have total coil failure, it is usually pretty obvious. If you have lowered available voltage, it may not be so obvious. The first symptom is usually misfiring near peak-torque RPM, which is close to 3000 RPM."
LOL
