Fiberglass bodywork...
I had this posted as a reply in the jacquemond thread, but moved it here. (didn't want to hijack that thread.)
Please read this and tell me what you think...
I bought a local fiberglass factory in January and started exporting towards the end of March last year. Replica and custom Superbike stuff. Fairings, tail pieces, rear huggers, undertails and front fenders. We use German import resins and gellcoats and I've been told by countless customers that our stuff is world class, if not the best in the world. And we land the stuff in the US cheaper than US manufactured products, even after shipping. Up to now we've been retailing direct to consumers (scared of distributors due to past experiences) and we've been extremely successful up to now.
We have also just completed R&D with our german suppliers on new CRF (carbon re-inforced fiber) technology and we'll be the first (and only) people in the world to have this. CRF resins are spray painted in the molds instead of hand laminated and then reinforced with specially developed carbon matting. The result is a product that is strong, flexible and virtually the same weight as carbon fiber but at half the cost. To complete the pricture I just bought another factory this year that does carbon look coatings. We are just about to loanch this on the net.
Why did I tell you all that? - Because at the end of feb 03 the mechanical work on my shark will be completed and then I'm starting on developing a wide body for it. I hope to have it done in 4 months and i got an idea in the back of my mind to make it available if there's interest.
I also want to look at making rear wings, chin spoilers and maybe even some dash and door panels...
Take a peek at the pic below of one of our latest custom bike products and tell me what you think...

FANTASTIC! A new source for custom goods - and a 928 "maniac" to boot.
I'd love to see some designs for the interior. the 928 interior - while still great - could benefit from a more up-to-date design.
I think it would be facinating to see the development of your 928 projects. Please post the progress of the work.
Bring it on.

I think your on the right track. Maybe some interior rear quarters as well?

Looks nice from were I'm standing What it it and can you drive a truck over it without it breaking?
I had the same thoughts, just not enough time in a day.

Maniac: I think its a great idea! If you could make some really strong door panels that look good and are 'bullet proof' I would buy a set. The stock door panels are prone to breaking. Also a good set off wide fender flares would be ausgezeichnet!

Maniac,
I think that's a great idea. If you can style them right and produce them for a reasonable price, I think you could sell quite a few. One thing I would like to see is a wide body kit that doesn't require cutting the fenders and splicing/glueing/spackling and whatever to fit the flares on. Given what a body shop would charge to do that kind of work, and the possible problems with joining the fiberglass to the metal, I would rather pay a bit more for a kit that has well designed complete fenders than to pay a body shop to butcher my stock fenders.

I think that you would have ALOT of interest. The problem I have read about is the *painting * of these pieces, and how the CF can handle the paint.
If the panel can look as goog as the current panel (painted outside panels), then it would b e great.
The front chin spoiler is something alot of us want.

Great, I would be interested as well. Front chin spoiler, rear wing, fender flares and interior parts. Price is key though, please keep it reasonable.
cheers,
Sab.

Thanks for the response guys.
Just to make it clear - The stuff we're making is NOT carbon fiber - It's fiberglass. Lightweight fiberglass like you've never seen before. The finish you see on the tailpiece in the pic above is a CF look alike coating we do for looks only and just to finish off the appearance of the product. (the superbike fraternaty loves it)
The actual secret is in the construction of our CRF fiberglass technology - Fiberglass that's lightweight like carbon fiber - that's the REAL innovation...

Excellent! i'm very interested. I like the idea of CF look internal panels a lot.
Body kit's are fair enough although there are quite a few out there already and they tend to be associated with adding even more weight to the car (with all that body filler!) what about lightweight body panels? Wouldn't it be great to have someone doing this kind of thing for 928's....

Do you have a current web page for Fat Bully?
Cheers

A LOT of people would be very interested...
As far as "top sellers", I think a chin spoiler would be a big seller, since many of the stock ones get damaged or destroyed. If your price was under the $250 price for the stock one, they would sell like hotcakes...
Wing options are also a good idea.
Wings, spoilers, etc...
Obviously, an entire widebody kit would be awesome. I think cost is a big factor. If you can keep your costs down, I think you would sell a lot of kits. Jacquemond does great stuff, but it is a bit too pricey.
I'd love to see a cheaper PES headlight kit.
Another thing that would be really nice to see, is some new tail light designs. I love the shape of the rear, but the old style tail lights are a bit dated. I'd love to see a rear section using modern tail lights. Maybe something like a Ferarri or a Vette, with round lights...

Okay how's this for an idea -
I'm going racing. My '83 euro *fat Bully* is gutted. I have all the interior panels cluttering my garage and I've been eye-ing that center console...
Imagine what that thing would look like with straight edges and smooth surfaces, no leather and no stitch work, in the carbon finish... eh?
Fender fares? This is a different challenge all together. How do you enhance PORSCHE styling? Definately not easy, but I have these subtle GT2 style flares in mind that follow the 928 styling and fasten with dzus clips, a tiny rubber trim between the flares and bodywork...
Sorry, I'm just letting the juices flow but perhaps I'm getting way ahead of myself...
