Question Need Subwoofer Dimensions

Hey Folks,

I was wondering if anyone already has dimensions for a sub to go into the spare tire compartment. I am going to go that route and thought maybe someone has kept dimensions on a sub they had already built.
Most people, from what I have read, have used a 10" driver. My plan is for a 12" driver since I already own a pair of them. The outside dimensions won't be affected though.

Got any text or a link?????

Thanx

Hey Bernie,
I'm sorry to cut in on your post but I thought that I had seen somewhere that you were in the car audio biz, if so I had a couple of questions for ya, if you don't mind.

I am about to put a system in my 85' and this is what I have: (1) JL 12W3V2, (1) Fosgate Power 750X
What I am not sure of is what too put in the doors(not going to put anything in the rear, probably end up just having the rear holes covered up when I redo the rear panels.

I am going to build a plate to go from the front to the back of the panel, basically the entire top section of the door and then recover that top portion of the door. I had planned on going with a 6 1/2 component set but one of the local shops said that the 5 1/4 set would sound better. Any thoughts on this?

Also, I have been looking at the Kicker Resolution Components as well as CDT's lower end. Any experience with either of these or suggestions on others in this price range?

Thanks Alot,

Hi Dave,

I'm actually in professional audio, not car audio.
I work for a company that builds concert grade loudspeakers for the entertainment industry. Incidently, we have a lot of our equipment in Las Vegas.
Installations:
Hollywood Room - MGM Grand
Theater For The Performing Arts - Aladdin Casino
Storm (Now Mamma Mia) - Mandalay Bay

Sound Companies:
Promix/Electrotec - Aerosmith, Tom Petty, etc.
Rock City Sound
Enterprise Live

There's more but I think you get the picture. Our equipment is also used at Superbowl, The Winter Olympics, Grammy's, etc, etc.

So I am really not an authority on car audio exactly. What I am doing is applying my pro-audio experience and contacts to equipping my shark. Not much for brand names and most of these drivers are all built by the same Chinese companies anyway, then stamped with whoever's name for resale.

My equipment is all Beyma. They supply our company with the 18" sub-bass drivers we use in our equipment. Their 18" driver will handle 2500watt peaks - all day long!!!! I started speaking with them about car audio and they do manufacture car audio components - very nice ones.

Here is a link to the "Sound System From Hell" that I am currently embroiled in. All Beyma drivers are handbuilt and independantly tested. My compliment so far is a s follows:

Doors-----
2 - 4" Beyma RF400 bass drivers
2 - 3" Beyma SD35 Silkdome midrange compression drivers
2 - 1" Beyma HT45 Silkdome tweeters
2 - Beyma ASF 3V, 3-way passive crossovers

Quarters-----
2 - 5.25" Beyma PL500 bass drivers
2 - Beyma PH25 1" titanium diaphragm tweeters

Rear Deck------
2 - Beyma PH35 25W RMS tweeters (open hatch beach stuff)

Sub Bass-----
1 - Beyma ASL12 - 12" 150W RMS

Amps------
2 - Beyma HC2300 stereo poweramp (800 side RMS at 1 OHM!!)
2 - Mallory 1 farad capacitors

Other Stuff------
2 x Aurasound Bass Shakers with proprietary amplifier.

Alpine deck and 6 disc CD Changer

That's what I'm goin' for------------

Here is a link to my system install. Feel free to follow along if you like what you see.

http://groups.msn.com/thediygang/soundsystemfromhell.msnw

I may also be able to obtain Beyma stuff for interested parties at an extremely decent price. If the doors work out well, it may make a nice kit.

Cheers
Bernie

Bernie,

I made a sub this summer that I have in the spare tire compartment. It sticks up out of the compartment 4-5". Here are the dimensions I used.

with some ascii art.
This may or may not come out.

//////////////19
/////// ---------------
///////|///////////////|
////9.5|///////////////|
///////|///////////////|
///////|____ /////// __|
///////4.5//|/2.5///|2.5
////////////|_______|
///////////////12
paste this into notepad, or some other program that has a fixed width font to see it more clearly.

And the whole thing is 15" wide so that for instance the top plate is 19x15. And the total height is 12"

I run a PPI 12 in this (not really the right speaker for the box, but that is what I had around), and it does fairly well. I have MB Quart 5 1/4's in my door panels (that took a bit of work). I run the sub off of a Hifonics 300w mono amp, and right now am running the quart's off of a cheapo ebay amp.

Hope this helps

Speakin' of sound systems...

Lately I've been shopping for a late-model BMW 740iL to replace my trusty 735i. I came across this guy's website where he has extensively documented the custom upgrades he has done to his 750iL.

Check this out (the pics are a bit slow to load but worth it):

Bernie, don't waste too much time on me, I was just interested. I've got a set of horns going in my shark and some CDT 8" subs, so I'm already set on equipment.

thanks

Well Bernie, When i do put the 12'' in my spare well I will be makeing the enclosure with i 3/4'' mdf top and the rest will be fiberglass. Doing it this way and with a good woofer it will leave room for the Amp in there also. I will form handles into it as well an dthe whole thing will pop out for DE's and such.

As to you question on demensions, That will depend on what your woofer requires. Mine only need .75cub feet internal air space. 12'' woofer vairy a lot I have seen some wanting 2cf internall airspace before.

Thurston.

Hi Thurston,

Thanx for the post. Your idea of using a fiberglass/MDF combo sounds like an interesting use of space.
I have emailed Beyma for a request on T/S parameters so I can start considering dimensions.
I am planning on optimizing the sub for the range of about 60-200 Hz. I have the Aura bass shakers and they will handle anything below that. This will help me keep the box size down I hope.

Thanx Again.

All Car Audio Expertise Appreciated

Cheers
