Post radio doesn't prompt for access code

Last week I bought a second 928. It is a 1994 GTS automatic. When I first test drove it the radio played just fine. The car had been setting at a dealer for a while and the battery went dead. When I took it for a PPI, the radio prompted for the access code. At the time I didn't have the code and just ignored it. After replacing the battery, the radio no longer prompts for the access code.

This is a factory radio (AM/FM/Cassette with CD changer). The owners manual says that if it doesn't prompt push the Band Switch button for 2 seconds. It also says that if the wrong code has been entered it adds to the delay before the prompt appears (up to an hour).

I have tried various things, but can't get it to prompt anymore. I have the code, but that isn't going to help, unless I can get it to prompt.

Does anyone know the secret?

Hey Gary, curious as to where you found that GTS.

Try these two:

First, diconnect the battery for one minute to see if the prompt appears (keep in mind that after battery disconection, the engine management 'brain' will need to relearn the mapping parameters).

If that didn't work, with the battery connected, turn the key to the accessory position and turn the radio on. Leave it sitting like this for a full hour (a bit longer is OK). The 'prompt' should appear after this period.

I looked around for a GTS, including one in Chicago that I got close to buying. Not being able to see it made me nervous when I found out that the rear quarter panels had been repainted.

I found the new red one here in San Diego. The original owner lives in Carlsbad and was servicing it at Hoehn Porsche.

Yesterday, I tried disconnecting the battery for about 90 minutes, but after reconnecting it still didn't prompt.

I also tried the accessory position on and the radio on for over an hour - no luck. Maybe I will try the accessory position on for an hour with the radio off and then turn on the radio.

I will try and get some pictures of the new car and post. In the meantime there is a poor quality photo on the 928registry.org site.

I like that interior color.

That original asking price of $54,900 is way up there. Hope you were able to get it down to a number more based on market reality.

Post a follow-up in this thread when you figure out how to get that radio back online.

Randy, that asking price was from 2 years ago when the original owner was trying to sell it. It didn't sell, possibly because of the asking price. He eventually traded it in at Hoehn for a new Porsche a couple of months ago. I bought it for substantially less.

It's dependant on which radio it is and whether you are locked out of the code.

With original radios we usually remove them and then connect a 12v battery for 24 hours. This normally unlocks the system and the radio display will then read "code"
Some units (CR-1, CD-1) have to be returned to Apline in CA for recoding.

Personally, I would just buy a more modern Blaupunkt and install that.

Just an update for the archives.

The radio is the CR-1 model. The normal fix when there is no prompt for the access code is to leave the radio on for 24 hours. In most cases that should cause the radio to prompt for the access code.

In my case, that didn't work and I had to have the local Alpine dealer reset the access code. The dealer said that they normally can care of this, but in some cases they have to send it back to the factory.
