Stripped Oil Drain Plug
I plan to try the oil pan drain plug repair kit from 928 Motorsports. If it doesn't work in my case and I have to replace the oil pan, what else should be done on a 1980 US while I'm in there? Any other products I should consider? Thanks!

I used Carl's kit as a temp fix since I did not have time to replace the pan and I had to move the car.
Worked great, just don't forget to JB weld the damn thing in like I did.
If you are taking the pan off I would inspect the rod bearings. Probably fine on a street driven 1980, but what the hell, after all the work to get the pan off, only a few bolts away from seeing the bearings. I replaced all of mine when the pan was off (they are cheap).
Motor mounts - usually fine on the older solid ones but you never know
I switched to an S4 pickup tube. The older ones do not have a screen on them, this caused some issues (long story) so I installed one from an S4. There is a O ring on the filler neck, need one of those.
You will also need the oil level warning gasket, goes on the front of the pan & the gasket for the oil filler neck.
I installed an oil pan from a newer (s4?) with heli-coil threads. If you go with a pan replacement this is the only option IMO to prevent this from happening again.
I used all new bolts with lock washers to install the pan with a silicone pan gasket from 928 Specialists.
If your rack leaks, now is the time to change it out. I didn't........
These are the "main" items I can think of from my pan job last year. I thought it was very cool so crack the seal and see parts of my car that have not seen the light of day since 1980ish in Germany. Just a very neat feeling.
Oh yea, if you are going to tackle the rod bearings, have a good torque wrench handy.

if your threads are stripped on the drain hole, cant you drill it out a size larger, tap it and plug it with some other plug? Try BMW or Mercedes, They may have a larger plug, then use that thread pitch for your tap. Could work, thats an idea no?

the above suggestion is assuming you arent planning on pulling the pan to do the gasket. If your gasket is leaking then just pull the pan and replace. You can find a pan for $100
