I'm a visitor from the other side - I own a 84 911 Carrera.
I considering buying my wife a 928 and I don't know a thing about them. Other than the usual car buying caveats (sp?) what should I know about buying one of these cars? Two things: It's gotta be an automatic and the air has to work. (in the early 911's when it works it doesn't work.) What year should I be looking for??

Before we dive into specific questions, I suggest that you read the thread "A New Visitor? *BEFORE* Your First Post, Read Through This FAQ". It's at the top of the list of threads in this forum. It might answer many questions and lead to more specific ones we can answer individually.

Once you found a car that you would consider buying, it is crucial that you have a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by someone who has specific experience with the 928 - not just any Porsche mechanic.

Remember the 928 is neither like a 911 nor like a Mercedes - it takes some special knowledge to deal with efficiently and properly. If that is done right, these cars are a lot of fun to own and drive.

Here's my three cents: If the car is maintained, it's a great "chick" car. It's small yet burly. I like that.
As for years, go newer; I'd say the more options, the better. It seems that the GTS evolution is the favored among the pampered. I have an older one and miss many nice features.....like dash lights

Nice, he is thinking about a shark for his wife and two women answer him! I can't remember when I last saw two women post back to back. But, do as Nicole says and then come back here. Be warned, 928's are addictive and if you get one for your wife you may end up adopting it. Actually if you CAN get one for your wife it's probably a really good trade, LOL.

 

Welcome! As many will say, buy the finest example that you can afford, especially if the wife is driving it. Otherwise, you won't be keeping it long if she's not happy with it. I'd make sure she goes with you to look at every 928 you are close enough to go see. Let her drive each one too.

If you cannot budget a newer model, you can probably find a nice pre S4(up to 1986) for a reasonable price that has had the ac updated to R134. My 1985's ac works well here in the Fla. heat. The AC can be problematic on 928s as much as 911s I'd think too. As in all cars too, buying one with a known & documented service history is probably paramount to avoid potential serious problems. As Nicole said too, a thorough ppi by a knowledgeable 928 mechanic is just as important too(not just a Porsche mechanic). There is a wealth of info here in this forum on anything you'd want or need to know about a 928. Many, many very smart & experienced 928 gurus.

We had a 911 cab that my wife loved. But she is completely addicted to 928s now & loves hers! Good Luck!

I have only owned my 928 for 2 weeks now and I LOVE IT! My husband has one, and I have always liked driving it. For some reason I like driving my own much better! Mine is an automatic, and the air blows so cold I have to turn it way down......even in the Texas heat. The interior design is really comfortable, highly recommended if she has an extended commute. I love everything about my 928.......which says a lot coming from a die-hard Lexus owner!

Keeping things on topic, though, I'd say to buy the wife a car that has been enthusiast owned and DRIVEN (i.e. well sorted/maintained). You don't want her nagging you to fix everything on her car, do you?
