Guys, rather than a custom exhaust is there any reason you couldn't use an OEM dual exhaust from a newer car?

Depending on what your VIN is, you might be able to do that. '85 and early '86 models are slightly different from '86.5+ models.

928 Motorsports has the solution to this issue and when you factor in the labor time at an exhaust place, then multiply it several times over for the requisite Porsche tax, and then add in dyno time, and the Porsche tax again, you're easily going to spend as much or more money to custom build an exhaust when you could have bought one off the shelf from 928 Motorsports.

That was my 70% solution.
First I installed GT cats with a used 85 cat back. THen went to an Ansa center section (because of pricepoint) and one of Devek's surplus Euro rear mufflers (there's one on Ebay now). The Euro muffler sounds great. Just switched to 86.5 setup because it doesn't have the 'squeeze' where it passes under the crossmember, and allows easy insall of RMB. May leave some horsepower on the shelf, but probably only a nominal amount. Quantity of cash left in my wallet (or debt left unexpended) compared with purpose built aftermarket or custom setups is not nominal.

So, no reason you can't do it, you just need the late 86 final muffler then you could use whatever GT/S4 center mufflers you wanted.
