Question Help To Remove Air Pump

Hi All,

I will be taking off my airpump this weekend to service the bearing. Does anyone have any BTDT's before I go ahead?
Doesn't appear to be too difficult but knowing what to move / remove to get it out would sure be appreciated.

Many Thanx

might be easier to drop a/c compressor and hold in place with wire or something. they share a common adjuster bracket so the whole mess has to be loosened up at the same time. btw, you might consider new bracket bolt to minimize risk of snapping it off in the block. why you replacing air pump anyway, doe it sound like marbles in a can or something?

Snow,

What did you mean, replace the bolt so you won't snap it off in the block? Lend some more in sight here. Thanks. (If reinstalling is a problem, why not use some anti-sieze?)

Was gonna take mine out soon, failure to operate due to marbles. LOL

J/K, Mine is inop. Thinking of installing the electric fan setup. But, also interested in finding out what the price for the pulley replacement would be.

The bearing is toasted and screaming like a banshi. I already dropped the belt but I have no fan right now as a result. The strange thing is that the car doesn't get any warmer than it did with the clutch fan operating?? The electric fan will kick in if I stand too long but no problem at cruising speed.
So the AC compressor needs out of there to get this thing off huh? Any further input would be greatly appreciated.

to clarify, there is a v-shaped adjuster bracket that is common to both the a/c and the air pump. i would replace the bolt that hooks this bracket to the block simply on the theory that too many loosening/tightenings may weaken the bolt and risk a snap off and ez-out journey. being the paranoid type, i tend to replace locknuts and bolts for peace of mind. you might want to use some optimoly on it as well.

Question

Thanx Snow,

So then dropping this bracket will release both components? What about hoses. Is there enough length on the hoses to and from the repective parts to allow some room to work or is it a tight squeeze once you have released the bracket?

I did mine without removing the compressor. Removal of the air pump filter housing gave me enough room to wiggle the pump out thru the bottom of the car. The tough part is the long hose. I pulled the pump with the long hose still conencted to it. It was easier to remove clamp on the other end of the hose and pull the whole thing out. There is a pivot collar on the bracket that the pump hangs from (long thru-bolt). I found that pressing the collar back makes putting the pump back on much easier. When you pull the pump, you'll see what I mean. I used a socket and channel locks to press the collar back, when you tighten the thru-bolt, it will push the collar back into position.

Greg, what did you do for your cooling clutch fan after removal of the pump, did you go electric fan?

Doz,

I did a quick rehab on the pump and re-installed it.

Thanx A Bunch Greg,

Was that all there was to it then? Do you have a part number for the replacement bearing?
