Side View mirror question

The glass came off the driver's side sideview mirror on my son's '87. Looks like just the glass itself since what is left is a flat surface with what appears to be either a thick grey adhesive or rubber-like compound on it. Does anyone know if the replacement part is just the glass and, if so, which adhesive would be best? Or does he have to order the glass w a 'backing plate' of some type to correct this? I can't tell from looking at the PET5/partsfiche.
If we have to replace the glass w a backing, what's the r&r process? Seem to recall seeing a thread on this awhile ago but didn't pay much attention at the time.
In other news, my golf game has been so bad I may give it up and work on the "fired" GT..gotta be less frustrating and a heck of lot more rewarding. Right now the '91GT and '88 parts car languish in my garage (I could get the mirror off it if we need the assembly)....one of these days.
TIA
Jim

This happened on my '87 944S, luckly the glass just fell off when I closed the door, it didn't break. I just glued it back on to the grey stuff with a thin layer of blue RTV. It worked fine, even the defrost still works and that was last summer that I put it back on.
I know this sounds like the hack mechanic approach but it worked.

The glass should just snap out , and disconnect the wires for the defrost element.
I may have one if you need it , I also found the
two lift springs for your sunroof we spoke of a year ago , if you still need them let me know
I will send them off to you!

Along the same lines, I have a question regarding side-view mirrors. On my '84 928s, the passenger side mirror is flat instead of convex. I don't know if this is how it was made at the factory but it makes it very difficult to use since I can only see a small slice of space with it when viewing from the driver's seat. Is there a place where I can get a convex mirror (the kind that says "objects are closer than they appear") to replace it with? I would much rather do that than stick a silly little plastic fish-eye mirror onto it.

Yes, but you have to really wqant one! The replacement convex, heated glass for your car is about $90 - call Jeannie at (828) 766-9280 to order.
The late model convex, heated glass is a bit cheaper - about $77.

Thanks for your reply, Wally. Since I consider this a matter of safety, spending $90 to get a better view of my passing side is worth it to me. I'll be calling Jeannie within the next few weeks to order it.
I'd order it sooner but, alas, my main vehicular device (my workhorse -- Chrysler Concorde) is currently undergoing some surgery. Once that's paid off and dealt with, I'll be returning my focus back to the alternate vehicular device (the stallion <g>
.
Thanks again,
