Old thread, but you guys will probably find it amusing anyway

So the same car -- had lots of issues getting it to run, several mechanics, many thousands of dollars to date. Either way, drained oil yesterday. Found what look like ferrous metal flakes in the drain pan. NOTHING in the OIL FILTER. Clean as a whistle.

What the hell does this mean? This time I installed a new magnet drain plug -- wish I had done that last time. The car has done maybe 200 miles since the original post.

200 miles in 4 years? Wow, you have BIGGER issues than lost magnets.

Talked with my mechanic as well as the inimitable Professor Louis Ott.

We're theorising that the guy who did the valve train, may have done something related to one of the valve springs. Car will <again> be towed to the mechanic, and <again> be opened up for inspection. This is not a great ownership experience .... like my friend NoHTwo O says ... 200 miles in 4 years is not optimal.

I think you should swap out the oil and use dino for now till you figure things out, no need to waste M1 to figure out if the engine runs

I'd say someone removed the magnet from the oil drain plug, and didn't tell the owner. It sounds like the owner has someone else do EVERYTHING to the car anyway.

I would never have put the magnet on the internal end of the plug in the first place. I put them on the external end of the plug, and on the external end of the oil filter.

WTF!?

This is the equivalent of dropping nuts and washers into the oil fill hole and wondering if the engine will be okay.

Not sure what you mean. This is my car. I do some work, and some work is done by those I trust. Do you have any idea what has been done to the car? Are you saying that if it were your car, you would have personally repaired bent valves and reinstalled the heads? I don't have the skill to do that and ESPECIALLY don't have the time or the back.

Your drain plug has a magnet. And Porsche put it on the inside. I really don't know what you mean by "I always put the magnet on the outside of the oil filter and plug"

Sorry Maleficio -- a bit harsh. Not a happy ownership experience for me the last 5 years.

I certainly would pay a real professional to do internal engine work for me.

A very weak magnet. I install neodymium magnets o all of my drain plugs, on the outside. I would never install one on the internal side of a drain plug.

Not harsh at all. Let it out. I can take it, as I hope you can, as well.
