Default Window won't go down -- NOT the switch

Hello all.

I recently bought my 1983 928, and the drivers' side window won't go down -- it's stuck all the way up. The switch looked like it was in bad shape, so I bought a new one and swapped it out, thinking it would solve the problem -- it didn't.

Has anyone had this problem? What's my next step? Thanks in advance!

Check the window motor for power. Does it run?

Open up the door panel test for voltage at the motor connections the two should have 12v across them with the switch pressed polarity should reverse in the other direction... If that seems good support the window in the up position and unbolt the motor from its housing. Clean /lubricate & reinstall - test? If no good replace motor.

Cleaning often works

on two older units i had, both times the steel pinion in the motor rusted. I had to remove the reg and apply power to the motor while turning with vise grips. after I got it moving i used PB blaster on it to loosen it up. in about 15 min of running it and lubeing it. i had good working motors again.

Don't worry. I have experienced poor contacts at the wire connections to the motor and restored them and all was well. Quick fix.
But if the motor is bad, don't try to take out the entire crank/winder mechanism; simply use an allen wrench to loosen the motor and swap it for a good one.

Try cleaning the driver's side switch for the passenger window. Same problem in the 944. The culprit was the driver's side switch, not the passenger side switch. The window was stuck down and neither switch would operate it.

Another option is to put your new switch on the DS and put the old PS side switch back in.

I had the same problem.

The wire had broken where it goes into the door (via the plastic tube).
It's a pretty sharp bend, and eventually it just broke from being worked back and forth.

Thanks to everyone for the comments and suggestions. atb -- I'll take a look at the wire you mentioned, then turn my focus to the window motor.

The wires looked ok at the door entry. I found the window motor and lubed it up really, really well. It didn't solve the problem. So now I'm going to buy one on ebay to replace this one.

Did you check for 12v at the motor? If not there, then the problem is not the motor.

My mechanic (rip) used to take a mallet to window motor to see if that would help.

I have done the same thing. When something won't work, I smash it one good one. If it still won't work......................I think about why it isn't working and fix it. I had an intermittant window motor and pounding on the door panel worked occasionally............so in my infinite wisdom, I took it apart and tightened the connections on the motor to switch. Duh!! They were simply not crimped tightly enough. Double duh !!! Of course all of my pounding on the door panel first had absolutely no effect whatsoever on making the situation worse. No, no. Never.

Try 12v to the motor, if it works, then try 12v where the switch connects to the harness next to the center console. If its doesn't work at the motor, go the ebay route.

I pounded the motor a few times, after lubing it up -- no effect. I'm guessing you guys are mostly serious about this (either that, or I'm pretty gullible... maybe both). I figured it would allow the oil penetrant to more deeply penetrate the seized motor. Alas, nothing happened.....

The motor is still installed inside the door. Where do I test the 12v? Do I need to remove the motor to test it? Is it simply removing that one Allen screw to get the motor out?
