How old is the fuel pressure check valve......might want to change it....since it sounds like you already did the filter...also how old are the fuel pumps....when my fuel pump was slowly dying I had a bit of an hard warm start problem....its much better with the new pump and check valve....

John,
car always fires up instantly first time in the morning then may require multiple cranks to start and a little proding from the gas pedal later in the day.
No consistant pattern though.
Thanks

It might be time to do a leak down test per the WSM , if its not good then a new set of injectors will cure a lot of the starting problems , as will the check vavle if its bad , and the fuel pressure regulator First try adding some techroline to a half full tank and doing lots of short trips (engine start and stops) this lets the techroline do its thing

If you replaced the fuel pump chances are it came with a new check valve already in it..... Of course I replaced my check valve...then had the fuel pump die a few months later that came with a new check valve
Oh well so now I have a sub 1000 mile check valve sitting around....

Carl's three-wire connector cannot "replace" a broken TPS connector. It can only replace both sides of the crank sensor connector or a similar knock sensor (not on 86 cars) connector. You may have one in the middle of TPS harness, but what is the condition of the TPS connector? This cannot replace it.

John S /Bill B/Mmerlin/PK,
I removed the intake tubes and complete air filter assembly in order to see if anything obvious was wrong under the intake.
I noticed the MAF was not seated properly in the intake and the top MAF O-ring was lying in the "valley" !!! WTF.
The car was recently in the shop for a complete AC rebuild along with power steering line replacement and new belts.
Apparently the mechanic pulled the MAF out of alignment when the air box was pulled out. The O-ring must have fallen off in the process.
I put everything back together properly and presto: instant starts and no bucking or exhaust popping at idle.
I put a to do list together based on yuor reccomendations.
TPS and new injectors are next.
Thanks Rich

Sounds like the car is "hunting". I think you answered you own question as Bill points out. I would be suspect of vacuum if that doesn't cure it.
