I have just pulled out all carpets which are not glued in place and done a thourough interior cleaning. It looks to me that the carpet used in our sharks is some real mediocre cheap bottom of the barrel carpet. The carpet in a Hyundai is probably far superior.
However looking into replacing all of it is probably very time consuming.
Has anyone successfully cleaned and somehow reconditioned their carpets? I have started to spray the carpets with alcohol and wiping it off with a clean dry cloth. It seems to remove most dirt, but the material still does not look very nice. It looks really "fuzzy", worn and cheap.
Also, what can be used for noise reduction under the carpet? It looks like I am missing some of the original foam under the driver side matts.

In my experience with three 928s the carpet is very high quality. Perhaps a PO replaced it with some cheap stuff.

I removed most of mine, laid it out on the garage flor and hit it with an upright "steemer" carpet cleaning machine. Carpets came out good. I used a hot glue gun to re-attach the carpet back in the car where needed.

They may be high quality but they are do not suffer abuse or high wear well. The burgundy carpet on my 87 was terrible, I replaced with a domestic kit and sure it may not be the same quality but it is a lot more hard wearing.

Replace it. It's not cheap, but boy what a difference it makes.

As for the sound deadening - I can't find the link, but there is some really good stuff out there.

Try an archive search and/or maybe someone remembers what it is.

My beef is with the backing of the carpet; more specifically, the fibrous material that seems to shred and fall apart when the carpet on the rear luggage area or the front passenger's footwell is bent or folded to gain access to the fuse panel or the battery box. It creates a mess of and must be vacuumed out, and the carpet then becomes thin and weak. The small carpet pieces behind the seats have a rubber or vinyl backing which seems like a more durable material. Is there a replacement carpet that has that type of backing but with the original outer fuzzy material to match my carpets? <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

I have to disagree with you ErnestSw, the carpets might look nice when new but the durability and therefore the quality is not good. My carpet seems to be original and as Ron describes the backing desolves and makes a mess and the actual carpet gets really fuzzy.
I have a couple of Mercedes's and they have quality carpet. I have an '82 380SEL that has been to Hell and back, but when I vacuum the carpets they look like the day they left the assembly line.

I've been looking through a JC Whitney catalogue and they have at least three different sound/heat insulation materials just for this purpose. The materials are relatively inexpensive and you can either buy adhesives to go with them or some the materials have adhesive backings. I haven't used any of them personally but I plan to buy some of this stuff when I eventually replace the carpeting and reinstall my door panels.

Another thing I found in the catalogue is the balljoint puller seen used in the Porsche 928 manual, the one that doesn't damage the boot. Only $17.99!

I know I have mentioned my sound proofing efforts previously, but let me summarize it.

1. I took out most of the carpet to clean and clean underneath it - not sure what the PO did but the car was dirty here.

2. Purchased the few missing rubber pads that go under the carpet - ebay, big 3, etc.

3. Installed brown bread sound proofing material everywhere. Along the console, under the seats, front and back, in the doors, in the back, behind the speakers, etc.

The improvement is unreal; now all I hear is the engine and stereo when I want.

My carpeting looks like hell as well.

I've been considering just bringing it to an upholstery shop and have them redo the whole thing. A bit pricey perhaps, but I'm not up to the task of doing it myself, having previously done my '69 Impala convertible several years ago - it's not a fun job.

I replaced ALL of the interior carpet in my car. One of the best things i did for the interior! Got rid of that old car smell etc etc. I used a set from GAHH or is GAAH?? anyway. 928intl also carry it i believe. it is cut to fit..BUT NOT TRIMMED TO FIT You will have ALOT of trimming to do. You can get the carpet in ANY color you desire, they just cut to the 928 pattern.

I removed the rear interior and will be covering the bare metal with factory brown when I get time (and after I fix the leaking rear window seals).

I asked at a local interior shop about buying a few yards - $74/yd! They said this Mercedes/Porsche carpet is a really nice tuffted wool material, and that the color is deeper and richer than the cheaper alternatives.

When I get to it, I will try and order over the internet somewhere. Any suggestions?

Jerry - that Brown Bread looks cool/hi tech! I would replace my super heavy tar sheets with that stuff in a heartbeat.

Yes. They're a Teutonic, serious breed, who will lecture you sternly in heavily-accented English if you roll down your window and say "moo" as you drive by.

They also cost three times more than equivalent American cows, presumably because of the crest emblazoned on their ***.

(As a side note, saying "moo" to a French cow will cause it to immediately throw its hooves in the air and surrender.)
