Post 86.5 on Ebay....Again

Third time it's been up. First time brought $8300 with a BIN of $9250. Second time brought $7600 with same BIN price. Reserve wasn't met on either of the first 2 go arounds. This time BIN has been lowered to $8990 and I'll bet that's the reserve price as well....

I saw that one on Autotrader before they started posting to e-bay. I think they wanted even more then. First look at the engine compartment was enough for me. Nice show room they have for taking their pics though. I remember they had a GTS for a fairly low price too, had the S missing from GTS on the rear.

My 91 GT has the factory coating flaking off the intake also. Don't let that put you off.

Look closer at the picture, the intake tubes are up side down. The vent holes to the timing belt are pointing up instead of venting fresh air to the belt. The interior is trashed also. I have the exact same 928 minus the turbo twists, and no flaking of the intakes, or abused interior.

I bought my 1985S from these guys last year. I had an inspection service check my car, also had some friends who live in Houston go over and check out car before I closed on the car and had it shipped to me in Allentown, PA. Transaction went smooth, car was as advertised. I took a chance as they typically don't have history of the cars. When I got it, I immediately changed the timing belt and water pump. One thing the inspection missed was the bad motor mounts. I just completed that about 2 months ago. If anyone is interested in the car they should call them. I paid less than the reserve they had on eBay. They will deal, especially if they don't have records on car. I told them about t-belt and cost to have it done, they knocked off $800 right away.
Like I said, I took a chance but the car is great.

Sorry Shane,
I don't see the "trashed" interior.
My interior is in much rougher shape than that one

You have to be clever with this stuff. Flaking intakes, stuff a little messed up are all bargaining chips. We should all know about these types of things by now and be able to see right through it. The seller may have no idea and you can approach him with those things to drive the price down. Take the ride home, visit Rennlist for a few days, get your tools out and fix it all. What you REALLY need to be certain of is the primary mechanics of the car. Things like T-belt / waterpump, suspension, brakes, etc. All the other stuff is more or less cosmetic and can be fixed "at will".

I would be standing there going "oh, that engine looks pretty beat up, I'll offer you ????".
See what I mean.
Use that stuff to your advantage and get yourself an 86.5 for pennies on the dollar.......

What is the stock intake for the US 1986?

The 85 at 928 Specilists has the spider, this one's looked like an uncovered S4. Does this car have the famous "flappy"? Heck, the engine doesn't look like the 85 or before. It looks like an S4s. All the control valves and stuff are in the wrong spots compared to the 85. On second look, it doesn't look like an S4's eighter. The intake is too wide.

What that added later by a PO? Was that part of the 86.6?

I noticed the seller didn't know the car's the dohc version.

Also, I noticed the tank for the window washer fluid is a bit beat up.

I don't guess the car looks all that bad, but she's not perfect eighter.

ALL 85/86 32 Valve engines have that intake. The S4 intake started in 87 and is the smaller intake that we know of today.
I have no idea if there was a spider intake used on an 85.......

Oh,
The 85/86 cars did not have a flappy......
Flappy started on the 87 model year S4 engine

They sure went all out with the photo shoot. it looks really nice, but as stated above, all those strange engine compartment issues are worth some bargining. I'd offer them 8000 pending an inspection. - Ruf

Has there been an upgrade in brakes? They look like the black GT/S calipers behind those wheels.

Nope those are the stock S4 brakes. They do look much bigger than the ones on the earlier models. quite the difference in stopping power. When I first joined the Rennlist the GTS brake upgrade was one of my priorities. Now since I got the 86.5 I realized that Wally was right when he said they weren't really need for everyday use. The S4's will work just fine, thank you very much.

The spider intake on the 85 on 928 Spec site I believe belongs to a Euro version 85. No sure, but I think so.

Question

My question is what would cause the intake to flake like that?? And are there any issues associated with that. It is an enamel, right? It should be near impervious. Could this indicate anything other than age?

I believe it is due to the casting. Some will hold up better than others. My 86.5 has no flaking at all and has about 30,000 more miles. My 86 does have flaking only not as bad, with only 82,000 miles on the ticker. As Bernie stated it is only an added bargaining chip when haggling over price. Mine were faded paint on rear and front bumper covers and side molding, broken plastic elbows going to the window washers, bad alignment and ride height (due to PO taking it to alignment shop not familiar with 928s') and of course the buggered dash and pod even though he installed covers that are marginal.
