Default Need help removing a split rubber bumper under throttle body

After removing my throttle body I discovered the air inlet tube underneath was loose. It turns out two of the rubber bumper bolts that hold it down had split.

So, how do I get the remainder of the bumper out of the bolt hold it goes into? Left-hand drill bit or have people had success with some other method?

Thanks,
Matt

You may not even need to do this. Mine were not very tight. I used a small chisel and hammer and just hit the outer circumference to get it moving. Then it was loose enough to use my fingers to turn it out.

Good idea Glenn - I actually did the same as you on my old 86 so maybe they have a habit of being loose!

By the way, on my '85 there are 3 of those bumpers holding the u-tube. I found out they are each a different size and using the wrong size can cause issues re-assembling the intake.

With that rubber cushion, I don't think they can really be torqued on very much and with all the oil and grease that usually fills the valley, not much chance of corrosion either!

IIRC, I managed to snap vice grips on the edge, and turn them. Do replace all of them, as the one you didn't replace will break when you reinstall. (Ask me how I know.)

I have replacements for two but not the third. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it does not snap. If it does, okay, I'll order it. They were already split when I got in there.

I tried vice grips on the edge, but this looks pretty snug. There is not enough rubber to dremel into to create a slot. A chisel may be the way to go. If that fails, I will get a screwdriver under the metaland bend it upward so I have something to grip with the vice grips.

Thanks for the suggestions.

If the other methods don't work, clean it off and JBWeld a nut to the top. Pull out your socket and get to work on turning it out.

One of mine came out with the vice grip approach but the other I had to cut two side off with a dremel and a cut off wheel to use an open end wrench on it.
