Default Water based paint on the 928 exterior?

It is my understanding that there were a few early GTS’s with a particular silver (Zermatt?) that was water based (early in Porsche’s experience with waterbased paint) and did not hold up well. Can anyone assist me in identifiying whether or not Polar Silver is one of thoses water based colors?

I don't have my documentation handy, but I believe there were different paint codes between water based and non-water based listed in the Service Manuals.

Can you look up your paint code on the sticker in the left door jamb?

I doubt it. Porsche used Glasurit or Lesonal brand paints on the 928. Lesonal is almost unheard of today and Glasurit didn't have a waterborne paint until the early-90s when they introduced their 90-line paint. It doesn't matter what held up and what didn't from that time period since nothing that was available then, will be available now. And blaming a paint maker for defective product 30 years after it left the factory is a bit over the top.

Well, calling a GTS "30-years-old" might be a bit over the top, too... otherwise you've got a point!

These materials change all the time, which I believe is one reason why a painter once told me not to do piece work on a car as old as mine. He said to either leave it alone or do the whole thing all at once...

I didn't notice the GTS part. It's possible then that some of the GTS models had waterborne paints since they would have been introduced after Glasurit put out 90-line.

My Black GTS has the water based paint.

Check out these threads on Zermatt. The second shows the effect of desert sun on it (probably an extreme example....):

Yes GTS's had water based paints as an alternative. There is a different code for water based and all standard & listed optional colors had a water based version. Not sure if this applied to all years of GTS ('92?) but it certainly applied from mid 93 on.

Like Roger my car is water based black with clearcoat. (741)

Standard '94 Colors: Standard Water Based
Grand Prix White: 908 93R
Black: 747 741
Guards Red: 80K 84A
Riviera Blue: 39E 3AG
Amaranth Violet: 39D 3AH
Speed Yellow: 12G 12H

Optional '94 Metallic Colors:
Polar Silver - (M): 93E 92M
Midnight Blue - (M): 37W 39C
Black - (M): 746 744
Slate Grey - (M): 22D 23F
Iris Blue - (M): 39N 39V
Adventurine Green - (M) : 39R 39S

And yes Speed Yellow was a standard '94 color - just not common.

1992 started the introduction of water based paints on several Porsche models there were 2 different codes for some colors like amazon green/black/midnight blue etc. Depending on the code on your car will tell you if you have the water base paint or not.

I will say however that I know of several Zermatt silver 964 turbos and none of them have had paint issues although I could not tell you if they were painted with water base paint or not. I have the Technik booklet for the 93 GTS which lists all the paint codes for regular and water base I can look it up tonight and see what the different codes are. I believe Zermatt non water base was 55 or something like that.

Black has 2 paint codes for that year 041/A1 and 700/A1 not sure which one is water base but I can look that up tonight also.

I will look it up anyway, the info I have has it listed as 041/A1 the A1 being the factory internal code for black so I am curious to see what the factory Technik manual calls out.

My Amazon on both my GTS and C2 are 39A both water base and I have no issues so odds are the zermatt cars that had issues probably baked in the sun too much and were not properly cared for.

This IS from the Technik manual - '94 - you may be correct for '93 - the codes for the same colors changed over the years. Not sure if that represented that different paint compounds were used - I suspect so.

I assume its obvious that we can both read the actual paint code label on our cars...

How true,

I have the codes for 4 different versions of Cobalt Blue used by Porsche and they are all quite different mixtures depending on the year. I believe black has something like 8 or 10 different mixtures over the years.

I have no doubt you read them correctly. I am just curious to see the differences and how accurate the info I have is, I also saw that there are some colors in 1993 that were used on the 964's that are the same name yet different code for the GTS vs the 964

The Zermatt Silver cars that I have seen go bad had the clear coat peel off. I don't know if there was a problem with the actual paint. Of course I don't know much about paint in general. So to me, it seems more of a clear coat problem than a paint problem.
