Post STARTING PROBLEMS

I am having a problem starting my 83. It starts up fine the first time. But, when I try to start it up after the engine is wrmed up, it will not do it. It has to sit 20-30 minutes (to cool?) before it will start again. I can smell gas when I try to start it for 20 seconds. What could this be?

Based on your description - leaking fuel injectors. This causes the cylinders to be flooded with fuel, resulting in hard starting.

That waiting allows some of the excess fuel to evaporate.

I'm assuming when you say: 'But, when I try to start it up after the engine is wrmed up, it will not do it...' that the starter cranks but the engine doesn't fire up.

How can I tell if/which injector is leaking? I bet that is the problem.

I have the similar or same problem with my 79. Starts great when cold but harder to start after its warm and has been sitting an hour or so. When this happens I give it half throttle while turning it over. It usually works. I have not dove into correcting this problem yet. I did remove all injectors to have a look. Not much to them. Im guessing its a check valve problem somewhere in the system that allows fuel to flow to the cylinders.

With CIS (K-jet) on the 79, its probably failure to hold pressure after switch off, which allows fuel to vapourise, and give you a vapour lock. Most frequent culprit in my readings is the check valve on the pump.
With L- and LH systems leaking injectors is more likely from what I have heard.
