Default Ohlins suspension, magnesium wheels

Bought a set of 4 Ohlins dampers today, they are the type that is individually rebound and bump adjustable. They are not this type, if you want to be bogled read this
but none the less, given the sophisticated is too complex for any street car they should be good.

The weight savings should be good too, each shock with cannister weighs about 2 kgs or just under 4 pounds, on the rear I will run the damper upside down which is the way you can get maximum weight savings. So the combined weight of the damper and spring is roughly 6.5 pounds or 3 kgs. I believe the standard strut/coilover in the 928 is about 10 kgs so that is a pretty massive weight saving.

It might get even better than that, I have a friend who is selling some Oz racing wheels for the 928, they are proper magnesium wheels, I have been told to be very carefull of these, do anybody know if they have a use by date? These wheels are very light, even lighter than my Carrera lightweight 5 spokes, about 8.5 kgs for the 10" rears. Any info appreciated, BTW these wheels were about $7,500 for the set when they were new.

Guys they are built for another car, I had the seller measure the bodies and shafts carefully. The bodies are almost exactly the same size of that as the OEMs. The devil is in the detail, mounting points, time will need to be taken to sort this out. I would like to mount them upside down but there are some issues in doing that particularly in the front as the spring would faol on the upper control arm.

The car they came off was a dirt circle track car, (rocket) the amazing thing was that the shafts are also the right lengths too. It will be interesting if I can run a smaller spring than 2.5" if I can that could change things as far as mounting positions go.

Apparently you can valve them quite easily yourself and there is a free online manual to help guide you through the process. I also got the tools to refill and pressurize the system, so them after you get them back together off to the dyno and see what a mess I have made of things

As for which model, I told that they are cirrent models that have been around for along time, he did mention a model number but I can't recall it. As far as plug and play, I'm not sure of this, one adjustment is done on the cannister and the other at the end of the shaft, notably that shaft is gun drilled.

I had an enquiry on Ohlins, they turned out to be too expensive to justify, so I ordered some offensively expensive custom Bilsteins instead.

They were manufactured last week and is now being shipped..

Yeah, it was the mounting points that I was most curious about. I was hoping someone had already come up with a solution.

Good luck on the install and let us know what you come up with to make it all work.

I would be interested to hear how much you were quoted if you care to share, PM me if that is a better option for you.

Hi Dennis, well I'm allowing $500 to 600 to revalve and adapt them, they are exactly the right lengths but the mounting points are where the work is.

Cheers Greg

Custom valved ohlins are about as good as it gets.....I talked to gumballs friend who runs a custom suspension shop at sears point.....that guy knows everything about shocks!! He really likes the ohlins....but penskes and motons aren't exactly shabby either! You should be able to get them re valved to whatever spec you want.....Gumballs friend could do it...gumball has the contact info...I can't seem to find it (shocker)

i run ohlins 3 way adjustables on my gts race car, they are the best mod ive ever done to the car.i have won the last 4 races ,2 at spa, 2 at silverstone in the porsche open here in the uk.
aurok made them for the 928 i told them each corner weight what tyres i use etc, aurok made the dampers on the audi lemans winning cars over the last few years. they cost £500 each rear 2 way adjustable. £625 each 3 way adjustable plus vat.

Hey Big, thanks for responding and that is great to here that you have been really successful Gives me some encouragement. So you have the 3 way adjustables! I thought they would be too complex, certainly too complex for me. For those of you who want to look these shockers up, go to my initial posting there is a link there.

If you don't mind me asking are they much of a premium over the 2 way? The price one of the other fellows got for the 2 way Ohlins was 500 pounds each, which is the price I was quoted here too. The thing was I didn't believe that was the customized price, just the cost of a standard type setup, if it is the customized price that is pretty good because that would be the same price as the Ledas with cannisters.

sorry guys the 3 way adjustable fronts were 725 each plus vat, not 625. the rears were 500 each though which are 2 way, both front and rear have remote canisters and they are for the 928 not modified from another car. i sent my bilstein coilovers to them in january so they could get the dimensions of the struts. 4 weeks later i had the new shocks. toby is the guy to speak to on 01420588191.

those prices sound about right no matter where you get the three way ajustables from. big, what spring rates are you using and is the white car the same one that i once saw in yellow about the same time as you were putting NOS on a GT2 replica?
