RMB
Hey I checked the archives and couldnt find anything, so now its worth asking about. Has anyone been able to find a RMB for a 85' Euro??? If so where? I see 928gt.com doesnt have one? Anyone retrofit on? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks

Mike - I'm kinda in the same boat as you assuming you have the same twin pipe setup I have. Since the cat-back (or front muffler-back on mine) is a single piece there is no quick bolt on solution for an RMB. I'm thinking about replacing the small intermediate muffler with straight pipes and then finding an aftermarket muffler for the rear. Of course this will all be custom welding and such but it should be very straight foward for any muffler shop that can weld stainless. Since my factory twin pipe exhaust can be removed in about 20 minutes I'm also toying with the idea of getting some straight pipes made which will bolt on to the front muffler exits and exit out the sides in front of the rear wheels for when I go to Watkins Glen (Vroom). I'll let you know what I decide on. Good Luck!
Hey Paul,
Ill let you know what I do...I was thinking of going just a new muffler for a new sound, but alas am undecided. Ho Hum--the tuff life of a Porsche owner...

Mike-
1) Yes I checked the date. Your scepticism re: my reading ability has already been noted
2) You stated you had searched archives & found nothing
3) the relevant point of the original thread is, as Wally P. pointed out,
[quote] The only reason that the Rear Muffler Bypass (RMB) isn't commercially available for your car is that there is no removable joint at the rear muffler. This means that an RMB has to be a cut and weld operation, which is beyond the capabilities or desires of most owners.

.
That information hasn't changed, I suspect. Paul D made the same point re; bolt-on & custom fabrication.
Good luck

When the intermediate muffler fell off my '81, I replaced it with a piece of pipe welded in. Not as loud as a RMB but louder and throatier than the stock set-up. My only complaint was the sound at idle was more of a "bloop bloop bloop" than the more desirable "wug wug wug" sound.

Mike,
They used to sell exhaust mating flanges for various sized pipes over the counter at parts stores, this is no longer the case, but you can check.
Failing that, muffler shops should be able to order them/have them in stock for a variety of sizes, though perhaps not in stainless.
That would cure the weld versus bolt up dilema.
It would probably cost a bit more... .
It goes without saying no welding on the car un less you disconnect the EZK and Computer - removal would be better.

P.S. If you do the flange thing there is a payoff to putting the attachment bolts where you can actually get a wrench on them and don't forget the gaskets.

Steve, I don’t think it was a muffler, but a resonator you replaced with a straight pipe. Porsche used them on all MY 928’s for the reason you stated ""bloop bloop bloop" than the more desirable "wug wug wug" sound". I have found resonators to have better flow than a muffler, most of the time I work around them rather than remove them.
FWIW
I am thinking really seriously about removing and remodifing my already gutted Cats and installing the guts out of a pair of Glass-packs into them. Hopfuly this will smoothen out the flow and change the tone a little as well (for the better).
Stock manifolds, --> Gutted Cats, --> Resonators, --> RMB = A 5.0 Mustang with a performance exhaust sound.
Mike I know this doesn't help you too much, but I did want to clarify the differences of a resonator and a muffler.
Cheers
