The 928 is too heavy to be categorized as one type of car as it is capable of many things and designed to be a little more than an autobahn cruiser. It is not a car made for quicker shifting and agile turning in tight radius' with dramatic elevation changes. (In stock form of course)
Face it, it's primarily a go fast car for high speed touring.

I'm sticking with my version of the story
Drove the 81 to work today (original transmission & synchros). Shifts like a hot knife through butter.
The only way I would buy an automatic 928 is if the deal was too good to pass up. Even after inching my way through Chicago this past weekend, I still prefer a 5-speed 928 over an auto.
When I drive in my mother Caddy, it's nice to have a automatic

My new Michelin's were tested in the rain at some very "fun" speeds this past weekend. Holy crap are these nice tires. Should be for what they cost.....$300 for each rear tire in a 17"

You want a tough transmission? My father-in-law's '71 BMW Bavaria is ready when you are. You'll have a newfound appreciation for the 928's box.
When my wife was 17, he took her to the steepest hill in town, per her in the driver's seat, and enigmatically told her, "Find the balance!!!" Emotionally scarred, she didn't drive another manual until I forced her to learn how again on my Prelude SH, which amazed her at how easy it could be. I'd say the 928 tranny is related to the Bavaria's, but much closer to the Honda's in driveability.
But don't listen to me - I drive a GT with only 31k on it! :-o
