Post Electronic vehicle tracking devices ??

Anyone BTDT with electronic vehicle tracking devices?

I looked at the Vshepherd device which is mostly used for heavy equipment tracking. It's a sealed box with GPS and cellular electronics in it.

The unit is hidden in the vehicle and you can check the vehicle's location by logging on to the companies website. You can also set a "virtual fence" which will alert the company if the vehicle moved outide the perrimeter set, and they will interact with the police for locating the vehicle, plus call you. It has a "last known location" system where if the unit cannot emit it's signal, you will see where the unit last was, with one drawback, the company software will remenber and display thee last time you checked the location of the vehicle. The good thing is that it has alarms where if a wire is cut or power is removed form the device, it sends an alarm and the present position of the unit using a battery back-up.

Plusses- low yearly fee, good way to find a missing car. Good, simple accurate device.

Minuses- fee for each time you log on to check the vehicle's location, no real-time tracking of vehicle, if the cell wire is cut, the unit mey not be able to communicate with the company. Fee for turining on and off the virtual fence.

I wonder what other units besides lojack are out there and can do the same thing. Has anyone used the GPS devices withh two-way comm so that someone can track their vehicle themselves?

If anyone has info, please let me know. I'm tempted to get one of the Vshepherd devices and try it. It appears to be best suited as something that is burried in the car and will probably be of limited use unless the car is stolen, then it could be very valuable.

Ideas?

TIA
Greg
