Curious...about an 80 Euro
Anyone familiar with 80' MY Euro's...
I was checking out a local 80'MY Euro for a potential buyer.
The critter is in pretty good shape but I am curious about a few things.
1. Was the 80' Euro a 300HP version?
2. If so would there be any reason the 300HP engine would be so quiet? I mean smooth as a Swiss watch, and QUIET!
The rear muffler on this sHARk is very boxy, has real edges.
Is this normal?
3.When checking the clutch; other than free play, rattles, squeals, smooth engagement in all gears, & chatter free is there anything SPECIAL I should be looking for?
What year did the infamous two plate clutch cease to exist?
TIA

In 1980 there was a 928 and a 928 S in Europe. The 928 has 240HP, the 928 S had 300. Typically, the S would have the spoilers and the forged flat dish rims - but you could add those on the regular 928, or delete them on the S, so it's not a sure way to tell. My understanding is that the S has the twin distributors, while the standard 928 doesn't.

hi john
my '84 euro engine (16V) is pretty quiet and smooth, i just thought thats the way they where!
i have driven two other S4's (32V engines) and have walked away because they both sounded like a bag of bolts...maybe they where terminal, maybe thats the way they all sound?? is it all the extra valve train bouncing around?
apart from a fruity exhaust note, my engine is mechanically sweat all the way upto the red line. idles very happily right down to just above stall.
i just thought 'great job porsche engineers'

ps
i will post damaged engines pictures, just need to get camera and engine bits together in the same place!!

John,
You can see it on the engine number this start with M28 and then the model number as follows:
1980 Euro 928 (without S): 09 for manual gears and 10 for automatic - 240 HK
1980 Euro 928S: 11 for manual and 12 for automatic - 300 HK
Bought have single distributor - The double distributor came in 1984 model, and this model has 310 HK

Hi John,
1. Was the 80' Euro a 300HP version?
>>>>> Could be, check the engine "M" #'s as Erik gave you.
2. If so would there be any reason the 300HP engine would be so quiet? I mean smooth as a Swiss watch, and QUIET!
>>>>> Despite the significantly higher output, these ARE smooth running engines. It is a very well designed package. The big difference comes after about 3800 rpm and up. They don't run "out of breath" too early like the non-S engines.
The rear muffler on this sHARk is very boxy, has real edges.
Is this normal?
>>>>> Sound like it may be a non-OEM replacement from your description.
3.When checking the clutch; other than free play, rattles, squeals, smooth engagement in all gears, & chatter free is there anything SPECIAL I should be looking for?
>>>>> Your list pretty much covers it, other than possibly adding to watch for any indication of clutch "drag" which could indicate poor centering on the intermediate plate - but this is usually accompanied by some shifting difficulties.
What year did the infamous two plate clutch cease to exist?
>>>>> Up until the 86 models. Change came about with the introduction of the S4 series.

Hey John,
I had an 80 Euro S that had the 300 HP motor along with the boxy muffler. It was really quite at idle. The muffler is made by ANSA.and it is stock.
As for the double clutch plates, I'm not sure when they quit using them but my 83 has it.
Regards,
Bela.
