Maint overhaul for new purchase?

Cool Maint overhaul for new purchase?

I've yet to comile the maintenance records that came with my shark into a databse, but it looks like everything was done on schedule. There are a few gaps in the records, but I'd say I've got 15 of 20 yrs worth going back to the original owner.

There are some things I want to do just for my piece of mind, and some that I know need doing. My question to you is what maintenance type things would YOU do if you just bought an 83 5-speed with 120k (now 121.5k) miles on it.

1)Full tune up, new plugs, plugwires, etc
2)Coolant system flush and service
3)Manual transmission service
4)Brake system service
5)Adjust clutch
6)Check thrust bearing
7)check timing belt tension (new belt/WP at 112k)
8)Clean injectors?

Basically want to get all new fluids into the car and change all the belts/hoses except the Tbelt. Anything else I should check/do before calling this car road worthy?

Anything else I missed just let me know

I would do all the above if you're not sure when it was done last.

Your timing belt only has 8k miles on it which is way below the suggested 40k interval. However, there is a time element involved too, and the rule of thumb is 40k miles or 4 years, whichever comes first.

My belt had 20k on it when I bought my car, but according to the records, it was done 6 years ago. It was only after buying the car did I learn of the 'rule of thumb', and promptly changed the belt, water pump, pulleys, and serviced the tensioner.

A word of advice. If you plan on changing your belt, make absolutely sure that you take it to a highly recommended 928 shop. Ask to see their 928 Manuals and their calibration tool; they must have one of the two tools in order to do the job correctly.

I got burned by a shop here in Milwaukee who claimed to have done "100's" of 928's. When they were 'finished' with my car, I had to return it twice as the belt tension warning light came on within miles of the shop. It was after the second time that I asked to see the 928 Manuals and tensioning tool they claimed to have; they had neither! The mechanic show me a simple dial indicator thinking that I'd never seen the real tool before. They never touched my car again.

That happened over a month ago and I am still seething over that one. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

I'd be looking at replacing all the coolant hoses when doing the cooling system service. Add in that inexpensive heater control valve too.

Hoses in the engine bay are subject to plenty of heat, oil and oil fumes, etc, and probably need to be changed at every other coolant service.

There have been several threads in the last couple years about coolant choices too. Autobahn brand is what the Porsche/Audi/VW stores sell. Others recommend DexCool, available at more common places like K-mart. In the warmer climates where freeze protection is less important, we run with a lower dose of coolant (30%) in distilled water, and add in a bottle of Redline Water Wetter.

Cooling system problems seem to sneak up on us only at the worst times... like when we are driving.

I did a little researching on the web and found out the Zerex Extreme 450 that you can get at the common autoparts stores is made by the same company that makes the Autobahn stuff too, BASF.

Porsche recommends these two.

I'll have to check the records, but I believe the Tbelt/wp/tensioner were replaced no more than 2 years aga, 9k miles ago. So I should be good but want to check the tension for piece of mind.
