Question Oil changes

I understand that there is a recommended torque for securing the drain plug, but, for those of you that do their own oil changes, do you actually use your torque wrench or just keep turning the plug in until it's nice and tight?

Just curious.

Recommended torque is...

60 Nm for the M22x1.5 bolt
50 Nm for the M20x1.5 bolt.

Don't know which one you have.

Don't forget the new crush ring, as Jerry mentioned.

Thanks guys.

I've got the new filter and crush ring ready to go. I just wanted to know if proper torque is a requirement. I'm going to do it without the torque and make sure not to cross-thread it. My buddy doesn't use a torque wrench on his 911, so I feel relatively safe.

I kinda didn't use a new crush ring because no auto parts store could even tell me what size it was. Of course, my drain plug seems to be at least 30mm and looks completely different than the 19 and 21mm ones sold on 928 intl--so that may be part of my problem.

Well, I crawled under there last night and found that I had the wrong size tool to remove the filter...those OEM filters are narrow! I'm breaking down and taking it to my P-car wrench, this time anyway.

Flint:

Try 928 International for the crush ring...it sells for about $1.00 or so, but try to find other things you need, too, or else you be blowing a few dollars on shipping for nothing.

Dave,

Not sure if they have them where you are located, but I got one of those (cheapo) filter end wrenches at the local Parts America (formerly Western Auto).

I also once bought a front wheel bearing there - same brand you'd get from one of the "big 3", lower price, no shipping.
