Pulling the intake
Hey all!
I'm having trouble with rough idle when starting cold (fine after warm-up), and starting when warm (gutless and rough, give it the gas, backfires in the intake, and then hey! runs great again). My best guess is false air from somewhere. So, I think I'm going to pull the entire intake. Any advice on normal problem parts I should replace while I'm in there, or helpful hints to make the procedure go smoothly. I'm just getting my feet wet on the 928 motor, so any advice will be a help.
Thank you.

Joe,
False air is always a possibility. You also might want to do a search in the archives for "cold start idle" or "rough running", before committing to the highly entertaining task of intake removal.
There should be a wealth of info on the topic. I've seen threads of that ilk more than once.
Good Luck,
Greg

Hey Greg,
I couldn't find any specific tips on intake R&R, but after some reading, my list of parts will include an idle stabilizer. I tested the MAF sensor this weekend, it checked OK. Still looking for advice on this task.
On another note, while testing the MAF, I noticed oil in the intake. Is this from the crankcase breather going to the driver's side intake chamber? Would it be possble to install an inline PCV valve? Would this help aleviate the oil?
Thank you.

Joe,
Greg is right. There is a procdure of shooting oil in through a vacuum line for the idle stabilizer fix posted recently. Search on the word idle. I would try that and look for other tips before tackling intake removal.
Greg Nichol's site has data under engine, vacuum and more. After valve damage and reassembly, my idle stayed way too high. I replaced all little vacuum elbows, lines and intake sleeves. No more problem. Greg Nichol's site has a method of pressurizing the intake with piece of an old inner tube with valve to check for leaks.
