Jim, a ? on the CD
Jim,
I see you are up and about.
About the CD, the info on it/them is bountiful, but it is a SLOWwwwwww process wading thru it.
I could just be another of those who seek instant gratification but is there a quicker way to extract what I need at any given moment? If its just a slow process I suppose I could trot over to Best Buy and pick up a spare 40 gig harddrive and down load page by page for faster access but if you have a better idea let me know. Still haven't got my CD - electrics -from the Ebay auction yet
That guy parting out his shark was a little high so I let it go.
Later, Thanks,
Keep em' rolling

Hey! Could this be the Allentown in the Billy Joel song? My roots are in OilCity Pa.
north of Pittsburgh.

John,
sorry about the delay..haven't checked the board in a few days. If you mean finding info on the shop manual CDs, the easiest way is to print out the MS Word table of contents. It lists the content of each 'image' and is organized by section so you should be able to narrow your search to a few pages and then just go to them. If you mean the parts fiche cd, then I don't know of any 'quick' way..I use ACDSee as a viewer w a thumbwheel on the mouse and can 'scroll' thru full screen images using the wheel..may not help much though if you're problem is access speed thru the CD drive.
I had to replace my cd r/w drive the other day and also put in another hard drive...prices have come down pretty dramatically..got a 60G drive for about $160. Also got a yamaha 24x10(?)x40 cd r/w drive and that makes a significant difference in reading from the cd....you can probably get a faster cd rom drive (w/o burning capability) pretty cheap although I'd go w the hard drive if just addressing access speed.
And yep, it's the Allentown of Billy Joel fame.

Hey Jim,
Just a heads up and foot note, if your CD’s contain wire diagrams, Porsche says for 928s MY 1985, 928 Workshop Manual, volume VI, wiring diagram model year 1985, sheet 3, field k24. The illustration of the “Toothed Belt Tensioner Switch” shows the switch contact open. This is incorrect. The contact is normally closed.
Good luck,
Steve c

Thanks for the heads-up Steve...did Porsche correct this in later 'updates' of the manual or is this a correction that I need to make manually. I'm working on converting all the hard copy wire diagrams to pdf's in order to get higher quality images and I'll see if I can get that changed if Porsche didn't already in the latest editions.

I have a set of batch files that convert the names of the files on the cd to something more meaningful. After converting, you can you use the file explorer to browse them (and search the titles). I also manually renamed the chapters that don't apply to my car. If interested, email me dw928@hotmail.com

Jim,
This tech bulletin is dated April of 1990, and is an update to the workshop manual. I check my workshop manuals and it shows the switch open (door open). My book is defiantly wrong. This bulletin supersedes the workshop manual-wiring diagram. My scanner is not working. If you have a fax number I can fax you a copy of this bulletin.
Good luck,
Steve C

Steve ..thanks for the offer but I'll just make the correction manually (Unless you think there's more to be had from the tech bulletin..no fax I'm afraid until I get off my butt and get winfax working).
Bob..thanks very much for the offer of help but I don't think it's worth spending time on. I'm working right now on converting the hard copy manuals to a searchable pdf. I sent out a 30 page sample and should have it back to play w soon. My goal is to not only have a searchable pdf of the entire 9 volume manual but also to have a searchable index w links to the pdf...between this and engine fire damaged GT, my winter is spoken for!
