Thumbs up O2 Sensor Affects NOX

Hi All,
If you remember a little while ago I posted about my gross polluter status from the referee. I imported my shark to CA from Canada and had to do the gray market dance.
From some of the replies I received, I was concened that the repairs needed to get the car passed would be a little high.
I decided to do a check of my O2 sensor and it wasn't reading anything? So, I purchased a aftermarket Bosch sensor from 928Inter. and installed it. That's all I did.
Here are the numbers now.....
I now have access to a brand new dyno thanks to Eric. I went in this morning and guess what?

Original Test
At 15mph / RPM 1364
CO% = 0.01-----------limit 0.80
HC ppm = 117---------limit 128
NO ppm = 3287!!!!----limit 1127
________________________________________________
At 25mph / RPM 1809
CO% = 0.00-----------limit 0.60
HC ppm = 31----------limit 103
NO ppm = 2201!!!!----limit 987
_________________________________________________

Test this morning
At 15mph / RPM 1349
CO% = 0.02-----------limit 0.80
HC ppm = 28----------limit 128
NO ppm = 772--------limit 1127
________________________________________________
At 25mph / RPM 1348
CO% = 0.02-----------limit 0.60
HC ppm = 21----------limit 103
NO ppm = 773--------limit 987

IT PASSED!!!!

So now you know.....
If your car is suffering from high NOX, it does not necessarily mean that your cat is baked or your manifold needs work. I am sure that these things are definately contenders for creating high NOX but the O2 sensor was my culprit.
It made sense to me that if the O2 sensor was shot, the computer would have no information available at the exhaust to adjust.

The sensor was 60.00 and I put it in myself in 1 hour. Back to the referee next week to finish off my Canadian to USA conversion.

Cheers
Bernie

Great news Bernie!!

I'll have to add oxy sensor to my knowledge base of NOx problems. Glad my diagnosis was wrong. (it hurts me to say that... <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Hope to meet you at a soCal 928 event soon.

Hi Bernie

Glad to hear about that O2 sensor. Tell me, did you notice any increase in performance after the replacement?

Hey Dr. B,
Don't sweat it....
I would have gotten around to your suggestions had this failed. The only drag is it cancels a trip to your place for a meetup and a little wrench twistin'
I am sure we will meet soon.

Jack,
I am finding the throttle response to be quicker. The car also starts with more authority. I can't say that I have found more performance but there are still other things to do.
I am making the assumption that I am more or less, getting the car back to normal. There has been many thousands of dollars put into this car over the years the 2 PO's had her. I think I am on a path of fixing a lot of goofups and aging components.

BTW - I would like to add that both smog tests were done with Autoauthority chipsets in place. They don't seem to have a noticeable effect on emissions. whewww.....
