Angry Rattle

I have that chatter or rattle sound after I start up and idle. If I put the car in drive, hold the brake and give it a little gas the sound goes away.My mechanic said it was a design flaw having to do with a plate in the drive train that was put together with rivets. After while they wear out, thus the rattle. Now I beleive the plate has come completely loose. I have a 1980. Anyone got some insight on this?

I had a rattling noise just as you describe it. It turned out to be the rear torque shaft pinchbolt being loose. It's pretty easy to get to by loosening up the heat shields and bending them out of the way. I was able to tighten it up without removing the exhaust. Rattle disapeard...
