Power Steering Return line alternatives??
The early PS return line for the 78 to 84 cars is NLA. Pt No 928 347 449 02.
I know it is possible for the old hose to be rebuilt at the local hose shop but are there any other ways around the problem?
Will the 85 Pt No 928 347 449 05 fit?
Was the change to accomadate different conections at the rack (thanks Brutus) or a reroute or what?
Any help appreciated.

The fluid return is from rack to resevoir. The resevoirs changed design. As long as the pipe is is good condition, the hose can easily be replace. Return side is low pressure.

Porsche did move the location and type of resovoir just slightly on the S4 cars....it sits lower in the early cars......I would imagine the later hose would work, you'd just have to trim it a bit to make it fit....its just a standard hose with a clamp.....& they all seem to leak anyway!!!

Roger just cut off the old collar on the hard line and replace the hose and clamp the hard line can stay in position I used a dremel with a cut off wheel

Just to remind everyone here that I am looking for an alternative that can be purchased for those who are not encline towards having the hoses rebuilt.
It would apear that the reservoir end may need a reduction in length to accomadate the change in reservoir position.
Now back to the rack itself. There is a difference between the 78 to 81 and the 82 to 95 racks. What is the difference and is there any difference in the locations or type of fitting of the hose to the rack?
About to try a later hose on one of my earler cars to find out. However I am sure someone else has been there and done that.
Providing the hose connections to the rack are the same I may have a solution for the problem.

So here are the replacement hoses(First Pic) and the original hoses(second pic). The return hose for my car was no longer available; I ended up getting the one pictured, cutting the U-bend off(top left of second pic) and just bending the hose into place. Turned out fine, no kinks. Part Numbers were:
* Pressure Hose: 928.347.447.02
* Return Hose: 928.347.449.06
* Sealing Ring(4ea.): 900.123.042.20
* Plastic clip: 999.511.121.40

I am building AN line in a -8 size for pressure and return. I have the stuff anyway, and it should help with pressure. When I bought lines for the 81, I bought them from Napa, who had them in their system.

I just talked to these folks in my 'hood who say they can fix my PS hoses while I wait:

They don't carry metric hose, and can't tell me the price until they see the work to be done, but I think I'll give them a try nonetheless --perhaps after tracking down the correct metric hose and bringing it to them. I'll keep you posted.

So I took my PS lines over to Royal Brass at 8:00 AM the other morning and they refurbed my return line in 15 minutes for $16.
They could have also done the pressure line, but they would have had to cut one of the fittings in a way that would force a bend that I wasn't sure would work. Also, it wouldn't have been fitted with the heat sheath on one end and the ring fitting in the middle. Since it doesn't appear to be leaking, I'm going to put it back on, but if I need to replace it I'll probably just go for a new one.
Here are a few pics of the old vs. refurbed hose. It's going on as soon as I'm done with my coffee, so I'll update on how well it goes.

Ok, that was a big waste of time. That fat f**king hose would not stretch enough to get back onto the little f**king ***** on the PS reservoir. I lubed, pushed, pulled and nearly humped the dam fender trying to get it on there, but no deal. When I finally pulled it back off, I had shredded the inside of the hose and a little chunk fell out. I quit. It's beer:30. I'm ordering the right part.
