Which way round?

Does anyone know which way round the main bearings go?
The glyco set I have, the main bearing shells are supplied paired as one plain (smooth) and one grooved for journal 2, 4 and 5. Does the plain one go in the ladder or the block? My guess would be the ladder, as it would then take the load of the piston being forced down under combustion.
Bearing 3 (thrust) both halves are grooved, and bearing 1 is a one piece plain bearing located by a dowel in the block.
