Cool Exhausted Exhuast - Thank You!!!

Okay folks, seems I've run into a small roadblock, as it were. I'm up at college now and have left my Porsche in the very competent hands of my father while away, and being the ever-supportive man he is, he took it up for its inspection this morning in my absence. All went well, it would seem, except for one minor detail - my entire exhaust system is shot to hell!?

Our mechanic (Richlin Imports, Harrison City, PA - great guys, if not expensive, but worth it should anyone from the Pittsburgh area be in the market) pointed out to my father where not one, but both mufflers had rusted through and are now leaking. (Apparently, and I have no idea if this is at all normal, but there appears to be a pair of mufflers in place...like I said when I first joined the community, I know almost nothing about these cars mechanically, and as such haven’t a clue if that setup is as it should be…?) Regardless, looks like I’m going to have to replace the entire lines from the catalytic converter on back, including the piping and mufflers.

Alright, Rennlisters, so here’s where I turn to you pleading desperately for your help. There’s no question that I’m completely incompetent when it comes to anything under the surface of these cars, so I have no idea what to buy or where to buy it from. I know that the RMB is a popular option that many in the community have seemed to gravitate toward, or would I be better off going with something like a complete Borla stainless cat-back exhaust system? I always thought the 928SP Afterburner-16 offered up by 928 Specialists looked like an interesting alternative (maybe even look into going with some MSDS Headers too!!! ), or perhaps finally being able to put my first DEVEK product on my car instead?

Honestly, there are countless options and I know veritably nothing about any of them. I’m looking for something that might boost my performance and sound a little, but more importantly offer a long-term solution. Any advice or suggestions, be them from personal experiences or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated. I don’t even know where else to begin other than Rennlist!

Again, thanks in advance everyone, both my father and I really appreciate the support!

Talking

Hey Deej!
My nickname is Beej, kinda funny. Anyway, I would say (since I am very performance minded) on a "budget" go MSDS since they are the same thing as the Devek level 1 headers, and then run pipes all the way back to straight-through mufflers like the magnaflow. Don't keep your cats, as you should be emissions exempt being a 78 car. You will see a very big power increase, and the sound is simply beautiful. You stomp on that and it just sings! Thats what I would do myself if I had a 78. Hope this helps man!

I had the same idea for my S4, cut the intermediates off and weld up Magnaflow cans to the stock piping but leave the cats on. I'm curious to see how many of our great donut consumers in california will actually drop the sweets and go chase after the sound of sweet

Question

Alright, so I’m stuck in the library at one in the morning attempting to concentrate on a paper, yet my thoughts keep returning to my ailing 928! Have to agree, I definitely wouldn’t be adverse to removing the catalytic converter, and headers are still in the running. However, assuming I were to drop the cat and run it straight back like you suggest, would I be able to find an exhaust that wouldn’t require direct connection to the cat and who would offer this? (I know, I know...probably an insanely simple question, but like I said, I’m better waxing ‘em than fixing ‘em! I didn’t see anything really of the sort on any of the Big Three sites…or perhaps I did, and didn’t realize it. )

Also, does anyone else have any possibilities or suggestions before I bite the bullet? Anything you can offer is greatly appreciated!

Go get an Avenger (cat back)from Tom Cloutier or even better, a Scavenger ( headers included, expensive).

Anyway, whatever alternative (not factory) exhaust will probably improve sound and HP. You will not listen to the radio again.

I disagree completely!

You'll just end up getting a louder radio like me! Ahhhh! That's better... what'd you say?

Seriously though, Djazz, find out from your local DMV if you'd be exempt from the cat laws in your state. If so, don't worry about cats and get rid of them! After that, it up to your budget. Personally, I have an 82 with a borla cat back stainless. It's nice. Headers would be nicer, but I'll cross that bridge when my ship comes in.
(Note to self: Don't mix metaphors before second cup of coffee!)

Sorry for my bad English. Its my third language and sometimes Im not very good at it. Well, perhaps good on the words but not on the meaning!

I meant: "the sound will be so good you will not want to listen to the radio"

Vincinte,

I understood you the first time. after I installed the RMB on Gretch, I stopped listening to the sound system. I just roll the window down and listen to "Gretch" sing to me........

Hey Deej,
Thats a nice looking car you have! Where did you find that and with such low mileage? Man, that car is worth quite a lot to the right person. Baby that thing man. Back to exhaust... I would not recommend running a single pipe like the avenger, as I'm a dual exhaust guy, and I wont get into the debate of single vs. dual, but if you have a V8, go dual and fu-ged aboudit! Your best option for power for dollar on exhaust would be the msds headers, and have the exhuast shop just run pipes back to your magnaflows and have the tips run out to the stock location. That is what I would do. But if money were no object, I would go with the Scavenger headers from thepowerbroker.net (Tom Cloutier) and then run a custom dual exhaust back and rid of his merge collector and his matching school bus-type pipe. No offense to Tom or his work at all, but I really prefer dual. So if you decide to go with my first suggestion, just buy the headers and go to any exhaust shop that carries magnaflow and have them do it all. Thats the easiest way to go dude. Have fun and take care of that car!

Lightbulb

the afterburner to me lookes like a 3" in/out flowmaster muffler with appropriate tubing and hangar locations for the 928. If that's the case, you could buy a 40 or 50 series muffler ($98) just about anywhere and have a competent muffler shop do the tubing fo you. The 50 series is a tad bit quiter or mellower in sound. My guess is the whole thing would be less than $200.

I base this assumption on the fact that I did this exact same thing except with a magnaflow muffler on my 98 540i because I didn't want to spend $1000+ on a Dinan or supersprint system. The total was less than $200 and my friend Dan who spent over 900 dollars for his dinan exhaust liked mine better! :-)

The sound was phenomenal.

Hey!

Sorry it took so long for me to get around to this, but I wanted to thank everyone who weighed in on this some time ago! Advice from individuals with first hand experience was priceless, and really left me feeling a lot more confident in ultimately making my selection.

Being that I'm a bit short on funds, and that I would have to do the work personally to save on labor fees (and calling me mechanically inept would be a step up from reality), I opted for 928 Specialists' Afterburner 16 model with the stock-look, chromed dual tip (though that's still on backorder, it seems ). Very simple installation, only requiring some patience and ingenuity to cope with the freakishly cramped garage. I'm holding off on tightening everything up until the tip arrives, since I'll have to remove the end piece and have the new tip welded on, but as soon as that's in, I'll be ready to go pick up those new inspection stickers!

At some point, I'd definitely be interested in replacing the headers and looking into BJ's dual system, but after doing this and the holidays barely behind us, I'm tapped for a while!

Anyway, thanks again to all those who helped me out of my little bind, your insights were all very much appreciated! A happy and safe New Year's to all Rennlisters and your families!
