Default Performance Edge: 18" MM Turbo Twists vs 17" Cup 2

Hey guys,

I'm wondering which wheel set you guys would think would make a better track/DE wheel for occasional track days, and daily driving.

No racing what-so-ever.

I'd also be interested to hear whether or not a complete non-racer could even detect the difference in performance between the two - given the same tire on each, and all other variables as close as possible between the two.

Here are my wheels:

18" Mille Miglia Turbo Twist replicas (not factory Porsche): http://edb.smugmug.com/gallery/1726675#85466587

Ft: 18 x 8 1/2 ET - 52: 225/40 ZR18
RR: 18 x 10 ET 65 - 265/35 ZR18

Cup 2's: - no tires mounted yet - Factory Porsche - WAY LIGHT! http://edb.smugmug.com/gallery/1864604#93691610

17 x 7 ET 55 - 993.362124.00
17 x 9 ET 55 - 993.362128.00

Also would be interested to hear if anyone has any tire SIZE recommendations for the two wheel sets for maximizing performance. I'll be keeping both wheel sets and probably will make one wheel set my track/DE set.

Thanks,

Ed

I'd go for the factory Cups.
235x45's (245's, if Hoosiers) & 275x40's would work & look nice.

The MM offsets are not ideal. I think you'd have a better ride and handling with the 17" cup 2's. The only real adtantage on the MM's is that you can run wider tires, but you can still run 235's up front and 275's int he rear if you want - so it's really a non issue unless you want to run 245's up front.

One more thing: good 18" tires are a lot more money than good 17" tires.
The 7" cup front wheel is kind of skinny for a 9" rear on the 928. You may have understeer pretty bad.

The cost factor my be the deciding factor for me. And yes, I would like to have wider wheels/tires, but we'll have to see how everything does at some DE's. Its not like I'm a seasoned track guy who could even tell the difference.

I had no problems turning some hot laps w/ 18" TT 225/265 (8" & 10" ) Next tires will probably be 235/ 275.
