Post Analog clock fun! I fixed it.

Hey folks with dead clocks, I've found the problem. And actually fixed mine today. As I thought, the capacitors go bad with time. And then the "escapement" doesn't have enought umph to work the clock. New caps, and the life came back to the mechanism. Yeehaw. So why am I telling you this, you may ask. I don't know. Maybe you can fix it yourself now. Or maybe I can do it for you. I don't know.

Gregg,

What did you do to your '79 to make it a 4.7L?

I bought this car last week. For 15 years one of my best friends owned it. He wore out the original engine. Either he or Devek found a fresh '83 bottom end. I guess it was cheaper to just bolt the heads on to the newer block than to rebuild the old one. Anyways, that's the story. I'd like to know what the horsepower is. It's definitely tolerable. Haha.

I'm still uncomfortable without a posi. But that's a big job on a 928.

My clock only works when the car is on, and seems to reset itself every time it is turned off then on again. Unlike the horn which only works when the car is off, maybe I need to switch those circuits around ?

Zandramus,
I know what the problem is. The clock has three wires. One is ground. The other two are 12 volts. And one of the twelve volt wires is for the light. It only gets voltage when the key is on. So, pull the clock and simply swap the two power wires. The ground is brown on my car. Piece of cake.

Your clock should be powered by a red wire running from F4 (plugs on the bottom of the fuse panel are lettered left to right - A on left, so F is 6th plug - red wire in 4th position on Plug F), and this wire is powered thru fuse #23.

I had a problem with the clock on my car not work so I stripped it, found a capacitor had blown and then replaced t with one I had in an old 944 speedo. Cost Nil,Satisfaction 10.
Once i put the clock back together it seems that over time the capacitor which is right next to the light bulb gets too hot because when the car is on so is the bulb.
My dash lights all come on when the ignition is on is this normal?
