I checked out the picture of the alternator hose on 928 International and you are absolutely correct!

It still happens to be soaked in fluid, which means that once I replace it, my problems won't be solved yet.

You *may* be very lucky. I noticed the same thing on my '85. Tighten the hose clamps under the PS fluid tank.
