Default Test Speedo on Bench?

I have the speedo out of the pod, how can I test it to see if I fixed it? Both it and the odo haven't worked for a while, the odo gear has been replaced. I did clean off some corrosion from the rivets that hold the flex circuit to the board on back of the speedo and I have rebent the clips in the speedo that make contact with the pins on the board. I would like to test it with a 12v pulse from a 555 timer... Think it will work?

TIA KK

One thing you may want to do is solder all the rivits on the backplane. I have found this to be the main failure point in the speedo's. A good wire brush cleaning and some rosin core solder will do, be careful not to induce too much heat though.

Thanks, I'll do that before trying to test it.

On a slightly different note, my speedo (analogue) sticks from rest. It will then register when road spped is about 30mph, or imediately if a tap on the front.

Anyone elae had this problem ? And how did you cure it ?

John you might try a bit of liquid silicone on the axle of the speedo , otherwise check the assembly as it may have part that is sticking, most likley is the old lubricant/dirt are providing just enough stick to cause your problem

John, my speedo needle does the same thing. If I give it a slight tap with my finger, it starts to work. Otherwise will wait until 20-30mph to start registering. A bump in the road also works. Haven't taken it apart to fix it yet.

I found a break in the circuitry just where Ketchmi said. Two of the grommets did not have continuity between them and the pins that go into the speedo. They were ok between them and the pod connector. Instead of trying to fill them with solder and burn something else in the process, I made a small solder bridge between the grommet and the trace on the PCB. I also re soldered the pins. I now have continuity all the way from the pod connector to the pins. I'll put it all back together after I finnish Harry Potter and let you know. The Speedo was also sticking until 25-30 mph, I jetted a very small spray of silicon in there, hope it works!

Default Rats! Foiled Again!

Got it all back together and the damn thing still doesn't work. What a pain in the A$$. Next time I am going to replace everything from the wires going into the pod to the speedo itself with a new harness. Stupid Flexcircuit!
