H,
You're not saying we need to fillup with Nascar approved oils?!?

My car turns both left and right.

Ok guys,
I did a search and came up with zip.
The 1998 diablo SV calls for 10w40 motor oil. Been looking high and low for mobil one 10w40 and its just not available. I think it was available at one time.
Question is what oil to use and what grade.

Thanks

You can use 5W50 or 15W50 doesn't matter on this engine.

Mobil 1 is not available in that weight. If you like to use the specified weight, you can try other synthetic brands like Royal Purple. They have 10W40.

I use Mobile 1 15/50

There have been significant changes in motors oils since that manual was written. They were probably using SAE SH rated oils. Currently we are using SL and the SM is soon to be released - if it is not out already. The GL-4 spec is also being used now.

If you are using a mineral based oil then look for a 10W-40. If you are using a synthetic and want to use Mobil 1 then use the 0W-40 or even 0W-30.

I use the 0W-20 Mobil 1 in my 575 Maranello and will switch the 0W-30 to 0W-20 in the Murcielago soon. These oils are superior for around town driving temperatures. I may or may not use thicker oils on the track but it can only be determined by experimenting. You are better off with oil that is too thin than too thick.

All manufacturers are going to thinner oils. They actually protect your engine better than thicker ones in many ways. It does depend on what your driving conditions are. Driving around town while using minimal horsepower and RPM is very hard on a racing engine stuffed with thicker oils designed for the track.

Heinrich,

I'm not as dismissive of Porsche's engineering credibility as you are, but I can't help but wonder why, if you could get an oil that flows better across a wider temp range than 15-50 and probably offers better wear protection, one wouldn't use that oil in an engine as large (its a long way from sump to cams) and with as much oil capacity (takes a while to heat) as the 928 engine.

I also don't know if your cavalier non sequiturs (e.g. a Lamborghini owner has an oil question, ergo there are not better oiling selections for our 928s) are supposed to funny or if you think they are serious contributions to the conversation.

Chad riddle me this. When recommending an oil for a line of automobiles, would it seem reasonable that within the same manufacturer's model line, one would expect varied oils recomnded for 4, 8 and 6 cyinders? V, boxer and inline ... or, nikasil vs alusil vs cast iron ... would one expect differing oils recommended? Why then did Porsche recommend one oil for 944; 928 and 911 at the same years? 20W50.

I see greater simiarities between other alusil V8's such as modern VW and Audis than nikasil-bored 911's and 4-cylinder 944's that did not employ alusil.

I think you all need to put your purses down and go drive your cars rather than wring your hands over which oil everyone else is using and if yours is up to par. Its just a car. Enjoy it. Doug Hillary has made recomendations, Porsche has made recomendations but still you want to debate this subject to death.

And interestingly enough, the majority of the people responding to the poll are disregarding those recomendations.

Just thicker oil that supposedly deals better with ring blow by.

But don't thicker oil make that finicky oil pressure gauge read higher.

Using oil with DH seal of approval. Plus I don't track my car.

15w-50 if Mobil 1
20w-50 with Royal Purple (it's been in sale here for less than Mobil 1)

40 weight causes my lifters to go ticky-ticky on hot days. Very strange.

Not true. High mileage oils add seal conditioners.A 10w-30 is a 10w-30 in terms of "thickness"

I don't believe that's the case? Can you find one of Doug's posts wherein he said that M1 15w-50 was not to be used in our 928s?
