Question What Would You Put In Your Auto 4 Speed???

Hi Sharks:

What would you put into an 86.5 Mercedes Automatic Transmission?

It works great now.

In the market place today there are many good transmission flushing machines, that utilize two methods of flushing. The first one, which I don't recommend, is the cooler line machines which is simply disconnecting the lines and pumping transmission fluid in and out of the transmission. This method only achieves an exchanged rate of 73%. The other method, which I do recommend, is transmission flush, dropping the pan, changing the filter and draining the torque converter (928 has a torque converter drain plug). The fluid exchange rate with this method is 85%. The bottom line is when you drop the pan you always do a more effective job, because that’s were the contaminants reside. Transmission fluid is the life blood of an automatic transmission. An incorrect fluid level, high or low, can cause foaming, which causes the fluid to overheat and oxidize and affects the operation of the transmission. The 928 has is a high temperature transmission. The best fluid to run is synthetic transmission fluid, not cheap.

just a side note. Mobil 1 makes an excellent synthetic auto trans fluid. I have used this stuff for years with excellent results.

Cool

Thanks Gary,

Mobil 1's synthetic oil has a great rep. Sounds like the tranny fluid would be good too.

I've been using Mobil-1 synthetic ATF in my '89 with great results. I did the swap the old fashioned way, without any hi-tech machines hooked up to the cooler lines. Those flush machines are required oin the Explorer where you can't drain the converter directly, but the risk of damage to cooler hose fittings is too great on the 928.

The whole swap procedure was written up and posted to p-list/rennlist, and is archived at Greg Nichols' Tips Page under the transmissions section.

Hope this helps!

Hi Dr. Bob,

Thanks for the tips. The Mobil 1 may be less expensive than other synthetics. I am a big fan of Greg's work!
