Exhaust Tone Question
Hello,
The restoration on my 84' S is coming along nicely.
When I purchased the car late last year the cat coverter was rusted and I had to do something for state inspection here in NC. I couldn't find a replacement converter so I went with a Motorsports bypass pipe. The exhaust "tone" (for lack of a better word) is too loud for my taste. Would a converter "tone it down" or should I be looking at replacing the muffler? (externally it looks great but I wonder if the insides are blown out)
Thanks!

So you can pass the NC inspection with a bypass without a cat? Consider yourself lucky.
But like Sterling says the cat will change/lower the exhaust note. I put a the bypass Y-pipe in my 78 and love the sound. Bout the only time it seems "loud" to me is when I'm in the upper rev range with the windows down.
Me I have to have the Cat Y-pipe installed to pass the Kalifornia emissions visual & tailpipe test.

I had the same problem and just need to take the edge off. I installed the Dynomax "bullet" resonators where my cats never were (Euro). Dynomax claims 2-4Db loss per resonator. It sounds to me to be an accurate range. I'm much happier.
The resonator design is straight thru, so no loss of power.
