Dang that thing looks nice. A bit rich, but very very nice. You would thought that the guy could have done a better job of hiding the wires before taking the pictures.

mount a tire around it and act like it is your spare tire, the bass comes from the 4" in front!

Looks like he put a lot of time into engineering that thing (and others, I guess). Pretty high-end looking result.
He appears to be a current or previous Rennlist member (blue sticker in the window).
Maybe if he sells a few, it'll help to offset his setup costs.

I am right here looking at the pictures of the enclosure assembly Looks like he sub is up high enough to allow for the spare to stay put from the pics. Sub magnet would sit in the spare is my guess.

Hi Guys,

Sorry I was not able to respond right away. Busy dodging tin over Boston this evening.

Yes, that’s my unit on ebay. After making the one in my car, I really fell in love with it. More looks then not wearing pants!

I noticed that there was nothing like it available (without going to a custom shop with $1000 in your hand), so I thought I would offer a couple for sale for kicks’n’giggles.

No simple task, as this is now the 4th design (now way better then mine ), and the time that goes into one unit is quite high. It must also be able to mount into any 928 in just a few minutes with no messing around with “making” things fit.

The one presently on ebay is not a basic unit. It has an excellent 12” Alpine TYPE-R sub, and a real nice BBS 18” rim center as a sub grill (There is actually a guy wanting to buy just the wheel center). I thought those items were worth at least $250, so I listed it at $650 for the whole assembly ($400 for the whole rear unit incl sub encl). Now it is an auction, so we will see, but $400 for this complete rear audio system with subwoofer enclosure is not really worth the time and materials (especially the time seeing as we have a 4 month old).

I will list the other units that I have on ebay for $450 next week. If there is little interest, I guess I’m wasting valuable spring garage time (my 928 to do list has ballooned to over 15 items, and that was before I decided to have the *** of my car cut to pieces!).

BASIC UNIT (no hole for subwoofer will be cut)

BASIC SUB ENCL (Subwoofer not incl)

I’ll do the $450 as firm for any rennlisters (3 remaining). This would include any custom amp cover openings. I would just need detailed amp dimensions, and placement requests. Same thing for rim centers, NC, just have to get them, though if they are just bolt-on, there is little need. It's DIY.

CUSTOM AMP OPENINGS

I have a good source for upholstery material, but stock there is very fluid. I have samples of various colors like linen, burgundy and dark blue.

If anyone is interested, please drop me a PM.

First class setup all the way!
Maybe not cheap $$ to some of us(me included), but looking at the finished product, you can tell alot went into it. Definately a fitting touch to a car like our 928s! I would think for the amp to be beneath the hidden area, some kind of venting might help keep things cool, perhaps on that front panel. Least my Alpine amp can get rather warm at times. I especially like the nice touch of the Wheel cover for the sub! If I already have a sub & amp set up, can you get just the wheel cover for the sub & how much?

Looks like the side of the amp enclosure are open.
If not with a box this size it would be easy to sneak in one of those computer
cooling fans. Them fans are 12V and low current draw.

My mini SoundStream Angina amp is in the rear sotrage compartment.
I propped open the door 1/4 inch to not cook the amp.
But I don't listen to the stereo loud like I used to.

Ernest (NYC) 10" Audiobahn DVC sub in the spare well.

Yep...sounds like a good deal...I went the cheapo redufo route....and although it only cost me like $30 in materials....it took a fair amount of time..and the final product..well...lets just say..I can cover it with the rear carpet (hahaha ). I like the way it's modular..very nice product...

Later,
Tom

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the kind remarks.

As Sterling wrote it is quite a bit of work. As with so much stuff for our cars, if you want something nice, you are on your own, so you have to get on it your self.

Some times it would be nice to pay some $ and opened up the FedEx box. But we don’t drive Honda Civics do we?

BTW, with no decorative wheel center for a sub grill, or cutouts for the amps, this unit looks like the stock rear interior. No one would know, if they looked in your car, that you are packing a “top end sound system”. The 928 rear carpet mat should also fit on top of the basic unit, though “Large” amps may need venting. I also made sure that this unit is totally concealed by the factory luggage cover. So even if you went “Bling” you can cover up.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Garth,

Thanks for the mention. I actually had a guy that wanted to buy just the wheel center for the unit on ebay.

Sterling,

Your set-up is what inspired me to do something similar. And yes, nothing come without the old trial and error.

Carpet matching is a bitch, but I one thing I did notice was that most automotive carpets were really to thick. The rigidity and thickness made it difficult to do some of the upholstery. The carpet I am using is a sort of half way between auto carpet and trunk lining. The trunk lining is great stuff to work with (for sub boxes, etc…), but some of it is too thin, and looks kind of cheap. The in-between material is the way to go.

Ernest,

Yes cooling fans may be required if some one does not op for the cover panel cutouts. This would be with large amps that were really putting out. A good place for them (with the decorative wheel center would be to vent from the side of the amp section to the sub section. Good venting would occur, and the cooling fans would not be visible.

Cheers,
Michael

Michael,

Do you still have any of these enclosures? If not could I buy the dimensions from you?

Watercooler, your system looks great, but IIRC were'nt you also doing strosek side skirts and a custom nose job too? Whats up with that these days? I'm kinda leaning towards those side skirts but would love to see them on first without all the other strosek stuff to take your eye away as in their promo shots. Please update, if you will. Thanks
