Hey Hacker, the 79-86 928s had dual disc clutches not clutches that dueled :lol:

and in 85 they changed to borg warner style syncros, so they are abit more reliable after that year.

As well having the dual discs adjusted are paramount to the shifting of the tranny.

As to the electrics I personally HATE the VW style fuses and that is why I have a complete 86 wiring harness in my 81.

Wow....anyone who could call 928 lines ugly hasnt looked closely at any corvette from 1968 to 2002.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and there are LOTS of beholders. Best car for me may not be the best car for you. I like Pinin versions of F-cars better than most of the Bert models. The 928 was just a tad more expensive/exclusive rthan the Corvette in any year they were both made. Lots of Corvettes sold compared with the same year 928. There are a LOT of non-original owners with either car, since the values have fallen off for both. Many comparo's are made with cars of different histories, good or bad. We don't have new 84 Corvettes any more than we have new 84 928's to hold against each other. So we have used vs USED sometimes. When I first drove my 928 it seemed ponderous. I learned to appreciate that as a positive. First Corvette drive was a beast, a '66 7-liter that was a real animal. It would go 165 according to the owner, rattled and squeeked, very scary even just at 70, but he loved to go 100 in it regularly on the street. Later Corvette rides have been a lot more civilized. Maybe not as civilized as the 928 seems to be, but what do you want for half the money new?

Did we ever decide what the criteria are for "mine is better"?

Honestly comparing the C4 and previous vettes to the 928 is a waste of time....since Chebby didn't get it right until the C5 with the engine in front and tranny in back....not even counting they still use LEAF SPRINGS...fancy "compostite" leaf springs...but its still the same basic spring design used on outdated TRUCKS (good ones use coil springs)....I won't even start the old vettes horrible ride and squeek machine, drive you nuts noises.....

ahh, Ice, that leaf spring is of great design. it is NOT AT ALL like an old truck. that spring stretches across the car from left to right not front and back and it is one set of springs for the whole back axil.. it enhances the action of the swaybar also.

I have had the pleasure of owning both cars of about the same generation (87 Vett, 85-928)

IMO off the line the vett SEEMS much faster. I am not sure if it is because of the rough ride or if it is actually faster. I know in the Vett at 130 you HAD to hang-on and you felt very unsecure. At 140 in the 928 i felt like I was just driving down the road. I think the vett had better G rate in the corner (one year it was actually 1G)... But that was only if you could keep it from hopping off the road... very very harsh ride

It has been my experience that outside of the 928 community, not too many people think a stock 928 is a good looking car, and is a contributor as to why the car is so relatively cheap to buy.

That's always been my assumption as well but I get too many compliments every time I'm out in it. Mostly I hear the knock that it was heavy and expensive back in its day.

Had an interesting experience the other day. There was a nice 997 on the highway that came up on me as I was on the way home. It was a nice looking couple in the car, they passed me on the left and I gave a small wave, not returned but not unexpected. We ended up in stop and go traffic side by side for quite a while. The husband kept his eyes straight ahead while his wife could not keep the eyes off the car. We were almost the same shade of blue.

After passing each other about a dozen times and I could only get out of 1st gear a couple of times, this lasted 20 minutes or so, they pulled up along side and I notice her window was down and he kept leaning over to listen. Damned if the traffic didn't speed up just then and I continued on my way. I don't think the guy had ever heard a V-8 in a Porsche before and from the smile on her face, she was impressed. Especially when my 1st gear lasted way past his. I gave him a thumbs up and we went on our way.

I have yet to have anyone make the comment that the '28 is ugly, everyone I encounter is either wondering what it is, how new it is, or how much I paid for it.

Yeah, I rarely hear people say they think the car is ugly. In fact one of the only people that has made any disparaging remarks was my wife. A few years back when I first started looking to buy she made the comment that it looked "so 70s". Since then she has grown to appreciate the car. It really does look much better in person than in pictures.
