Hi to all, about the Kelly Moss engine, which I must admit just looks absolutly fabulous, problem is that I hear it has a broken crankshaft. Anybody care to shed some light on this troubling event. I might be better off getting my own made after all. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Greg, regarding the Kelly-Moss Racing 928 engine.
This info is as of June 4th:

"According to KMR, the KMR 928 engine is running perfectly fine and that
there are no problems with the bearings, steel sleeve and/or girdle/crank
flex."

Have you heard something more recent than this?

Brad I don't have the date it happened but, if you didn't know the crank broke prior to that I would presume that it has happened since. Do you know it blew up a crank? If so when? Apparently the crank was a type that didn't have the late design full counter weighted crank. If that has been changed since maybe now they don't have a problem. Maybe this full counter weighting is the difference between the Devek crank and the others?

From what I've heard, the Devek crank has several differences, one of which is that it's a fully counterweighted crank. There was mention that the Kelly-Moss car is supposed to be at Road America for the Labor Day weekend. I'll be up there and will definitely be looking for it.

The crank that Kelly-Moss Racing is using is of the "eight counterweight" type
like the Porsche re-design for the GTS.

The original unverified (and later dispelled) rumour was that a bearing(s)
had "pounded out". Apparently NO truth to the rumour.

Mike, even if this thread is buried in the "back pages" by then, please let us

Kelly-Moss is only about 30 minutes from where I store and work on my car. I had thought about going by there, but figured they probably wouldn't be to receptive to some guy just walking in and asking a lot of questions about their new engine, especialy if it did actually have some sort of a problem. I'm hoping Road America might make that a little easier. I'll let you know.

That is correct, the DEVEK crank is the only 8 counterweight crank made by SCAT, there are also other differences in our cranks. This is by formal agreement with SCAT's president. and Tom Lieb is a very honest individual.

If the crank in the KMR engine is an 8 counterwieght, it is a DEVEK crank!

Hi Mike, I was wondering since you are going up to see Road America and the KMR team would it be possible to find out what is the brand of dry sump pump they are running. I know it is a two stage scavenge only pump, using the system that Marc from devek has previously described on the boards, it seem to fit exactly where the airpump is placed or in my case soon to be displaced.

I'll see if I can find out about the brand of dry sump pump, and anything else of interest I can dig up. Some of those racer guys can be pretty secretive though, which I guess is understandable in some cases. I might have to hire some little kid with a camera to get in close.

My sources do not indicate that the Crank came from DEVEK.

Hey Jay - Hows it going? I'm still recovering from having to spend timein Springfield.

On the Stroker crank issue, I have information from one current distributor that the scat crank is specifically designed for "chevy" rods, and t hat custom rods do not need to be had - just chevy sized ones:

..So from that info, I do believe that with at least one of the distributor's scat-made cranks, we can go into a freaking summit cataloug and simple pick and choose, while we are still understanding the fact that we must custom order pistons of a very interesting pin location and shape (especially for my chosen compression ratio)

I don't know from personal experience, but I've been told that the Porsche bearings in a 928 are wider than Chevy bearings. *IF* that's true, and *IF* there are Scat cranks being made that will use off the shelf Chevy rods and bearings, those bearings will be narrower than the Porsche ones. All other things being equal, wider bearings will have a higher load capacity than narrower ones, and should last longer if the loads on them are the same as on narrower bearings.
