Is there any going back now?
I recently drove my friend's 1995 928 GTS 5 spd. Since this was my first 928 that I had ever driven will I not be as impressed with any other 928 that I ever drive? The GTS was AWESOME and I really liked the 5 speed. Just looking for some opinions!

If you drove my Godzilla, a good lightweight all-leather sport seat 5-speed 1987, you would see no need to spend the extra $ on a GTS unless you liked the plushy feel of the GTS. But anything earlier than 1986.5 would not be at the same level as the GTS. Only exception is a Euro in excellent shape.

I once took a friends GTS for a short spin. Felt no different than the few S4's I'd tried, or even for that matter, my '85, except more power. Obviously, there are many more differences, but none that I would say make it impossible to be very satisfied with a "lesser" model as far as driving experience goes.

As H mentions above, anything younger than 87 with a 5spd should be as satisfying especially if you add a compressor

Just be happy you didn't drive mine...I would have had to call security!
Tough call really as it depends on what kind of ride you are looking for. You can always power up an earlier model for less than what it costs for a 5 spd GTS. 87 or 88 onward are still very nice cushy rides. I had an 82 3 spd auto that was nothing short of a blast for the entire time I had owned it....very versatile machine. Go out and test drive a few others after you decide what purpose you need a 928 to fill.
However, nothing will EVER replace a 5 spd GTS!!!

As others have said above, I think you will be just as impressed with well-maintained S4 5-speeds or GTs. Especially when you consider the entry price of a very well-sorted S4/GT against the price of a mediocre GTS.

All 5-speed cars are basically the same.
Good thing you didn't drive an auto GTS - then you would be well and truly ruined for all others!

I agree with Randy. I LOVE my autobox. I LOVE my autobox. Did I mention I love my automatic 86.5 ?? Before I bought my 86.5, I tried and liked some 16 valve cars. Then one day at Devek, a customer found out I was considering an 84 that Devek had on consignment. He said not to buy it until I tried a 32 valve car. I did, and that changed everything.
The only trouble with the automatic 928 32 valve car is the rapidity with which you wear out the rear tires. Leaves patches of rubber all the time when it makes the 1 to 2 shift. Loves to power out of corners. But most of all it loves any speed above 3000 rpm and 80 mph. If you want a grocery getter get a Jetta wagon. If you want a GT car, get a 928 and forget about gas mileage, and don't forget a V-1 to go with it.
ps: and Jay, you know I also own a 914/6. Different animal.
