Default A new transmission problem, help!

The car is a 1983 US model with auto trans. It ran and shifted fine until this morning. I drove it about 30 miles to drop of kids at school with no problem. When I went to continue on the work (about mile away) the trans started to slip. There is a minor fluid leak, that comes and goes, but the car hasn't leaked anything for a few weeks. I checked the fluid level about 6 weeks ago, and it was fine. Not sure it fluid level is the problem (I hope it is). I have a friend that can look at it today. I plan to have him check the fluid first, then what? Any other adjustment or anything he can look at. He is a general mechanic (not a Porsche mechanic). Please advise, I hope this is a easy fix, or my trip to Sharks in Hell will have to be cancelled.

Do a search on how to check the tranny fluid level and make sure it is done correctly. The tranny is very fickle about proper fluid level....Long story made short: park car on level suface, engage parking brake, hold brake pedal down and run through all the gears one at a time, put shifter in park and with teh engine running make sure that the fluid level is correct in the resevoir.

I checked it on a level surface, but not running, last time. The fluid was warm. I will keep my fingers crossed amd hope that is the problem.

Now lets see... why would it stop leaking???

GOT IT!

Could it be that you're low/out of fluid?

Sorry, I had to point out the obvious, Steve.

You are now officially...

But seriously, let us know how it turns out. Hopefully it's just a fluid issue.

Andrew, yeah it seems that obvious, but the small leak is on and off. I will let you know how it works out. Didn't realize that fluid level differs when the car is running or not, I just thought the fluid had to be hot. Yes, I feel dumb! I will let you know what happens.

Problem solved, down on trans. fluid!! I had the fluid checked on a hoist with the car running. I was down about a quart. Took it for a ride, shifted fine. I normally don't neglict my cars (letting the fluid go low), but I will plead ignorance for not knowing the proper way to check trans fluid. I feel stupid, don't you guys hold this against me in the future.
