Question Aftermarket Ignition Coil?

My '83 euro (CIS) has what looks like a standard ignition coil. I know with EFI, and with the dual distributor cars, they may have different setups. My question is this: Can I replace the stock coil with an aftermarket one? And if I do, what voltage? They have 34,000v, 40,000v, and 60,000v. Will the stock distributor cap take a higher voltage coil, or would it cause problems? Or just a stronger spark?

You can change out the coil. I have a 79 928 and the ignition coil is a Bosch unit. So I put on a MSD Blaster ingition coil. Gives me about 10,000 - 15,000 more volts for spark.
I know it works...I road race my shark and I can feel the difference in the higher RPM range.

Cool

Wally [generally noted as a "guru" on 928's has said the same as I believe when it comes to coils: Buy the original. First of all, you need what the original requires...this is a computer controlled device and if you mess around with it you are asking for trouble. Second...aftermarket coils, though possibly more powerful, may or may not be more effective. A spark is a spark- in this age of very tight emmision controls, if a stronger spark was REALLY really required for proper emmissions, then Porsche probably would have fit it from the factory. Remember, the ultimate hot-rodders are the factory engineers!
