A 87S4, red on black (very nice car) just sold down the road from me,
I worked on the car 2 years of ago 87000 mi on it.
The TB had a re-tension done at 60000 (she paid 1400) They saw her
coming!
The gearhead who now has the car knows "0" about 928's,
and I MEAN "0".
I told him not to drive the car, and to call me and will talk about the car.
I think that a SWEET RED 928S4 is going to DIE!

Ah...."The TB had a re-tension done at 60000 (she paid 1400) .." I wonder how much they charge to actually change a timing belt ??

Here, A local owner was quoted $1300 for a retension from a Porsche dealer. I can think of three possible explanations:
1) They quoted a belt replacement, not knowing what a retension was.
2) They do not want to work on 928s. Ever.
3) I can fathom that a Porsche dealer (actually any shop) would not want to do a retension (only) on a 928 for which they had no maintenance history. If they touch the belt then they have some warranty exposure. You cannot do a complete inspection of the whole system with just the p-side cover off. If you were to tension (and tighten) the belt with a bad pivot bolt in the water pump and then the car soon thereafter has a "Big Dave" incident, your proverbial rotary impeller is soon coated in fecal matter.

$1400 for a re-tension thats at best a 1-2 hours job.....insane...it should be free from the shop that did the T-belt in the 1st place.....I also think it goes back to the dealers that don't want to work on 928's......which really aren't that hard to work on....
